Will the bobcat has been seen by many vets and specialists. He looks normal but does not process information, such as sight and hearing, and runs into walls. We want to release him to the wild, but have to make sure he is capable of surviving.
BCR loves to help out and support wild feline conservation. We were recently asked to participate in a project that collected fecals from captive snow leopards, in order to be used to train dogs to identify the smell. These dogs will then be used out in snow leopard habitat to better help the researchers. Helping out the snow leopard is important as lets face it, the leopard doesn’t have the fact that people can ride up to it sleeping on the plains on a jeep and grow fascinated by it like the lion. The current situations with cougars (mountain lions etc…) are interesting. You could be a Florida Panther, which are protected and slowly heading towards extinction (as many are hit by vehicles each year due to a huge population growth in Florida), or you could be a western puma and legally hunted in states like Oregon for a $10.00 fee. The cougars we mostly hear about are those that are people’s former pets. We get calls all the time where people went out and bought a cute fluffy cougar cub only to realize that like all animals, they grew up. Our “cubs” were sent here around 2 years ago after their mother was shot in the wilderness. A lot of you have been asking how they are doing, and this video taken at feeding time on whole prey night, will give you the chance to see that they have grown up. Shere Khan is a Siberian/Bengal cross breed and was one of the hundreds of unwanted golden cubs that result from breeding for the white colouration. Because he was born the wrong colour he could not be sold and by the time he was four months old he was pressed against every side of the pet carrier that had been his home since birth. Up to his belly in feces and old food, his baby teeth had rotted through his face from the lack of a proper diet. He could only drag his back legs when he was taken in by Big Cat Rescue. Now thanks to the loving care of staff and volunteers you can see he is more than 700 pounds of very healthy tiger.
