This is a taiko performance that took place in my back yard in 2007. My friend Hisako who is closest to the camera was just a beginner that day but she did a fine job with the routines.
During the Opening Ceremonies there was a parade of flags representing the countries where the participants had come from.
The 4th Uchinanchu World Festival was held in Okinawa Japan in October of 2006. It was a festival held to welcome home uchinanchu people who have emigrated from their home land of Okinawa.

Okinawan Minyo is a popular style of music in Japan. Basically stated the minyo songs are songs of the common island people who inhabit the Ryukyu island chain. Many of the Odori style dances that accompany these songs include Okinawan karate movements. This was the way the okinawans hid the art of Karate from the Japanese when Japan invaded Okinawa and forbid any form of martial arts. This film was not taken by me but I decided to use it because of the great karate movements included in the dance performed by one of the customers to the bar that night.

A friend of ours has been battling with a potentially fatal health problem. But after a courageous battle is sucessfully defeating it. We held a surprize party for her and wouldn't you know it the sanshin was introduced and we enjoyed this song.
