Welcome to the 2007 edition of Turkeys vs Tigers. Here at Big Cat Rescue we try to give our cats the best life possible in captivity. We have a great enrichment program, and during the holidays we try to spice it up and one of the things we do is give out turkeys to the big cats. Watch as some of our biggest residents dine on their raw turkey dinner. *Thanks to CBS Tampa's Channel 10 for coming out once again to promote this. And we are also thankful for having the greatest volunteers and supporters that any organization could ever ask for! THANKS! Savannah Cat Rescue- Serval/ Domestic Hybrid
Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Fl. provides a permanent home to over 140 exotic cats. We have limited space and try to rescue what we can as well as try to get tougher legislation passed to lessen the amount of unwanted big cats. Sometimes people will get a smaller exotic feline like a serval or bobcat and hope that due to its size it will make a better “pet.” They soon learn that we speak the truth when we say exotic cats don’t make good pets. And other times people will buy from breeders a hybrid variation like a bengal cat or a savannah cat with often the same results. This video takes you along with us on a rescue of a savannah cat. We ask animal lovers to take in unwanted domestics and not to buy into this big cat crisis we have here in America. Thanks for watching, and for more info please log onto: www.bigcatrescue.org
Watch as we let Joseph and his pride of another lion and two tigers into their new large enclosure. These cats have been settling in since October and getting use to their new life here at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. Sadly, there are still at least hundreds of cats like them out there in the U.S. Some states have little or no laws regarding ownership of big cats. And those that have tough laws lack the abilities to enforce them. Few people realize the small amount that eventually find a decent home at one of the few good rescues/sanctuaries out there still take away resources that could be spent on saving these animals and their habitats out in the wild. www.bigcatrescue.org Thanks again to those that helped us from the Wild Animal Orphanage (Texas), Columbus Zoo, Humane Society of Ohio, Knox County Ohio, IFAW, & to our wonderful volunteers and supporters who made this all possible.
Joseph's pride is the story of Big Cat Rescue's newest arrivals. It is very sad for us all to see so many big cats in all kinds of strange situations across the U.S. Big Cat Rescue is not only trying to take in what we can (in the past six months we have now taken in 6 tigers and 2 lions and a handful of lesser cats) to provide them a permanent home where they can live out their life with respect, but we are also trying to get better legislation passed to protect the big cats still out there. For more info on how you can help us, as well as info on how you can support conservation efforts for these great cats out in the wild, please check out: www.bigcatrescue.org
We try to make every day a holiday for our cats with our enrichment program. Watch as Shere Khan, China Doll, T.J., Bella, Bengali, Cameron, and other felines get some donated trees. Thank you very much for making this a wonderful year for all our cats! Have a safe and happy holiday season. www.bigcatrescue.org *special thanks to the Target store in Tampa, Fl. for donating the trees. Kenny and Willie, both tigers, get a new home at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. They were rescued in October, 2000. Finally, with the help of supporters from coast to coast, they get the home they deserve. To help other big cats go to www.turpentinecreek.org
Will the bobcat has been seen by many vets and specialists. He looks normal but does not process information, such as sight and hearing, and runs into walls. We want to release him to the wild, but have to make sure he is capable of surviving.
A flagship species is one chosen to represent an environmental cause. And often we see lions and tigers used in promotion and advertising. And these are the two species used the most to produce cubs for the industry as well, and there are ethics matters that come into play with that. There are an estimated 41 species of felines out there and by protecting enough habitat for lions and tigers we then save habitat for all the lesser known cats as well. Big Cat Rescue is committed in not only giving our residents the best life possible but we also support saving wild habitat. www.bigcatrescue.org Big Cat Rescue is a proud supporting member of the International Tiger Coalition, Snow Leopard Trust, among other feline conservation efforts. **More on flagship species: http://www.fauna-flora.org
Feeding time has to be the cats favorite time of day. We do our best to make sure their diets are not only healthy but also interesting for them. Listen in as Scott takes you through our food prep for the big cats like the tigers, and watch along as you get right down next to the big cats as they eat their raw meat. Bon Appe'tit! www.bigcatrescue.org
At Big Cat Rescue we often try to help others understand why the cat populations are going down in places like Asia and Africa. We sometime forget that this is happening in our own backyard. Take a look at the current situation of the Florida Panther. Even though their numbers are slightly higher than reported in the 1980’s after decades of over hunting there are more killed on the roads than ever before. In 2006 we had 11 endangered panthers killed by vehicles. And in 2007 we have 15 so far. Their total population is an estimated 80-100. *you will hear Brian say 14 twice in the video as in the time it took from filming to producing another cat was killed) What will be the future of these predators here in Florida? For more info on the Panther (cougar/ mountain lion etc…) go to: http://myfwc.com/panther *Special thanks to those that appeared in this video and those who helped me collect panther data.
