Murali now becomes the highest wicket taker in Test Cricket history. Sri Lanka VS England 1st Test | Day3 Courtesy http://www.hilalscricket.com/
http://www.hilalscricket.com/ Dealing in boundaries and steam rolling ahead it never looked like the Aussies could stop him. The second new ball hardly rattled him in fact all the Aussie quick men were being belted to all parts. Ricky Ponting the Australian skipper was cornered tactically by Sanga's aggression towards the new ball and Malinga's resilience. The ball was too new for Mcgill to cop yet another pasting so the only suitable bowling change would have been Symonds or another part timer. Sanga was looking beyond 200 and was surely planning to accelerate the scoring rate with Malinga getting his eye in and providing good support. It looked very much like only an outside influence and not the opposition that could dismiss him and some times in life the worst possible thing happens.

In the build-up to this Test, playing in Sri Lanka has been described as one of the game's toughest challenges and England responded with an outstanding bowling performance on the opening day at Kandy. Matthew Hoggard took four wickets in 25 balls during the morning session as Sri Lanka hit the depths of 42 for 5, then Monty Panesar chipped in with three after a partial resurrection from Kumar Sangakkara and Prasanna Jayawardene who added 106 for the sixth wicket to lift them to 188. But England couldn't finish with their full card intact after facing 17 overs. Alastair Cook went third ball, planting his front foot across the line to Chaminda Vaas, using his 100 Tests worth of experience with the new ball as Hoggard did so successfully. Michael Vaughan could have gone, too, but Asad Rauf gave him the benefit of very little doubt against Lasith Malinga. There were three overs from Muttiah Muralitharan; that's a battle that will unfold on Sunday. (Description courtesy Cricinfo) www.hilalscricket.com

Critics will also grumble about Murali's good fortune at playing Bangladesh and Zimbabwe so regularly. Indeed, it is true that approximately 25% of his victims have come from these two minnows. But Murali would also have enjoyed Warne's volume of matches against England, a team against whom he has been equally prolific. In any case, his 26 wickets in this series is now par for the course considering the fact that he raced from 600 to 700 in just 12 matches: an average haul of 8.33 wickets per Test against opposition that includes Pakistan (2 Tests), England (3 Tests), South Africa (2 Tests), New Zealand (2 Tests) and Bangladesh (3 Tests). His wicket-taking was no more prolific against Bangladesh than it was against the rest. - Charlie Austin, Cricinfo
