The 1920s... St. Petersburg's streets are full of gangs of homeless kids. From time to time some of them are caught and placed into a special school which is named after Dostoyevsky ('SHKola Imeni Dostoyevskogo' - hence the name SHKID). SHKID has gathered hungry, but impudent and sharp kids. This shelter of comedians is ruled by an 'old-school' principal (brilliantly played by young Sergei Yursky), an honourable and intelligent man. His disarming trust gains childrens' trust in return, helps them not to lose themselves in those vague times, makes them grow from unruly kids into thoughtful and caring members of adult society.

War and Peace (1968) is the gigantic motion picture epic, based on the novel of the same name by the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, has won worldwide critical acclaim. For the shooting of the filmâs battle scenes, such as the Battle of Borodino or the 1812 Moscow fire, a regular army was mustered into service, as well as a specially created cavalry regiment. Over 12,000 soldiers participated as extras in the crowd scenes. More than 35,000 costumes were made for the production. The details of 19th-century Russiaâs everyday life, the period costumes, society and its traditions, the psychological characteristics and the heroism of the people, the glory of Russian arms â all this attracts the viewer not less than the love story of the delightful Natasha Rostova and the Prince Andrei Bolkonsky.
The James Aldridge story "The Last Inch" was written in 1957 and translated into Russian the same year, while the first English edition came out in 1960. Most unusual story line: veteran pilot decides to make some extra-money by filming underwater shark feeding at the remote Red Sea location. He takes with him young son for a plane ride, while goes underwater. The trouble is: while filming, he has been viciously attacked by a pack of angry sharks which render him incapacitated to fly home. Now he faces an option: either both of them die in the desert or his little boy must fly them back. His son has some rudimentary knowledge of flying, but does not have any real experience. The father lost a lot of blood and he is in constant pain. He is drifting in and out of consciousness, hence additional danger may be that his son will be all along in the air. Keeps the viewer on the edge of the seat. The musical score is well chosen as well. In 2008 this film celebrates the 50th anniversary.
Based on early stories by Maxim Gorky, this movie won the grand prize at the 1976 San Sebastian Film Festival. The flamboyant and rugged lifestyle of gypsies living in the Austro-Hungarian Empire early in the 20th century is beautifully screened in this story about the love between a young horse thief and a rebellious young gypsy girl and their tragic deaths during their marriage ceremony.
