skinny dipping
Naked man
In this scene from Johnny Weissmuller's second feature film, Tarzan and His Mate, Jane goes swimming naked with her jungle lover. The producers got away with this at first due to the fact that the FCC had not yet been created; however, the scene was quickly removed due to complaints from religious groups and mad mothers. Note the small breast size of Underwater Jane as compared to the more buxom Landlubber Jane. That's because Maureen O'Sullivan did not perform in this particular scene. Instead, Olympic swimmer Josephine McKim was used as a double for Miss O'Sullivan. The decision was not made because of any modesty issues. The skimpy costume Maureen wears throughout the film proves that she wasn't shy about showing her body. It was simply agreed that the grace of a professional swimmer would be more pleasing for the audience. Maureen's revealing jungle costume in Tarzan and His Mate was another thing that drew complaints from the bluenoses; therefore, in all future Tarzan films, Jane's body was to be significantly more covered up. Thanks to Ted Turner for putting this classic scene back into the classic film where it belongs.
At this early point in American film history, Tarzan of the Apes was an instant success. Elmo Lincoln was perhaps the best actor at the time for the role. It's a fairly straight forward telling of the novel, tho Edgar Rice Burroughs was frequently on the set in an advisory role and his input was seldom utilized. In the books, Tarzan was quite the self-made scholar and this was barely touched upon in the film. For 1918, this turned out to be an excellent film, parts of which still hold up today. It's a solid 7 out of 10, and well worth seeing. NOTE: This is the original version, not the VHS version.
Produced by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the original creator of Tarzan, Tarzan and the Green Goddess is the most true to source material of all the Tarzan films. Shot in Guatemala, the scenes of burgeoning jungle are crisp and lush. As Tarzan proceeds through these picturesque settings, he discovers explorers hunting for a totem called the Green Goddess in Mayan ruins. With the aid of Tarzan, the totem is found and inside is a secret formula for the world’s most powerful explosive! When the formula falls into the wrong hands, Tarzan and his friends must pursue a deadly chase through the jungle. Tarzan and the Green Goddess bursts with action at every turn.
