English dubs over French cards in this haunting version of Poe's classic tale. A stranger called Allan (Charles Lamy) goes to an inn and requests transportation to the House of Usher. The locals remain reluctant, but he gets a coach to transport him to the place. He is the sole friend of Roderick Usher (Jean Debucourt), who leaves in the eerie house with his sick wife Madeleine Usher (Marguerite Gance) and her doctor (Fournez-Goffard). Madeleine is the beloved muse and model and is being painted by Roderick. Post war ULTRA and MAGIC sci fi flik about invaders from outer space
Toy makers (Laurel & Hardy) are tenants of the old woman and her children who live in the shoe. This Peep family falls upon a scandalous foreclosure for Bo Peep's (Charlotte Henry) sake. Stan manages to bungle up Santa's toy order and gets them fired before Olly can ask the Toy Maker for a loan to cover the foreclosure. In its time, "The Birth of a Nation" was a masterpiece. Its racist undertones and revisionism are quite disturbing, but it is still worth watching for its historical influence.

'Beat the Devil' is a fine piece of work by Houston, Capote, and Bogie. Its totally enjoyable. Good pacing, snappy dialogue, plenty of atmosphere and unusual locales. The plot has a half-dozen twists and surprises--and more than a few chuckles are to be had, at the wild antics of the outlandish cast of characters
