Re-release theatrical trailer for the 1941 Republic serial, THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL, starring Tom Tyler, Frank Coghlan Jr and Louise Currie. Considered by many to be the finest cliffhanger ever made, this 12 chapter serial materialized when Republic Pictures struck a deal with Fawcett Comics following the collapse of negotiations for SUPERMAN collapsed with rival comic book publisher, DC Comics. Republic treated "The World's Mightiest Mortal" with a sincerity seldom seen in earlier film adaptations of heroes from the four color comic book pages. Adding to the credibility was the scope of the serial -- which travelled from the remote "Valley of the Tombs" locale in Asia to the U.S., then back again -- a stoic, yet stalwart portrayal by Tom Tyler as Captain Marvel, William Witney and John English's capable direction. and one the serial screen's most colorful mystery villains, The Scorpion. Best of all were Howard and Theodore Lydecker's eye-defying flying sequences utilizing a wired dummy with spectacular take-offs and landings provided by stuntman supreme, David Sharpe. Nearly 70 years after its original release, THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL still continues to enthrall viewers. About the title: Republic Pictures' had the habit of chnging the titles on several of their serials when they were re-released. Thus, THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL became RETURN OF CAPTAIN MARVEL, CAPTAIN AMERICA was retitled RETURN OF CAPTAIN AMERICA, HAUNTED HARBOR became PIRATES' HARBOR and so on by merely changing the title frame.
