The early Muslims are credited with inventing distillation and could distil just about anything - from alcohol to perfume. Hygiene is very important so they invented and manufactured soap - centuries before the West - and hundreds of bathhouses were built throughout Muslim cities. They understood the fundamentals of light and how we see, and gave us the camera obscura. They invented algebra and worked out the angle of the tilt of the earth. They built the first windmill, pioneered the concept of the crank rod, and designed the first ever torpedo. Muslim creativity also led to the invention of a unique instrument called the astrolabe,it could find the direction of Mecca, tell the time and, with the help of the stars, navigate you across deserts and oceans. But perhaps most important of all they pursued the cause of knowledge, translating and preserving the works of the ancients and building the world's largest libraries their 'houses of wisdom'.

  • In an extended Channel 4 interview, President Ahmadinejad says Iran does not need a bomb and said his country had a role in future Iraqi security. Mr Ahmadinejad said, "I should say this to the good British people... we want peace and friendship for all. We should help. This war should finish." He also told the programme that "if the American government, and British government, corrects themselves, problems will be solved." Mr Ahmadinejad also stated repeatedly that Iran does not want to develop a nuclear bomb, saying, "We do not need a bomb. We are against a bomb actually. "There are many reasons that we're against it. In our belief we are against bombs [and] from a political point of view it is not useful." And when questioned on the possibility of UN sanctions, Mr Ahmadinejad said, "From the beginning we said everything should be solved by the agency."

  • The Seychelles—tiny little islands, remote location, beautiful coral beaches. Few destinations could hold more allure as prototypical tropical islands. Yet the allure of the Seychelles for geologists is not their nature as oceanic islands; on the contrary, geologists are fascinated by the Seychelles because they are so very un-oceanic in nature. The Hawaiian and Polynesian islands started life as volcanoes in the middle of the Pacific; Iceland, Bermuda, and the Azores did the same in the Atlantic. But the Seychelles are not volcanic at heart; they are granitic, and granite is so un-oceanic a rock that its presence virtually defines the existence of a continent.
