The British car ferry M/S Herald of Free Enterprise departs the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium. The crew have left the bow doors open and water splashes into the car deck. So much water pours in that the car ferry capsizes, drowning 193.

Amtrak's worst accident in its history takes place in Big Bayou Canot, near Mobile, AL., when the Sunset Limited derails from a bridge into the water, killing 44. The accident occurred after a towboat with barges struck the bridge and deformed the rails. The towboat's pilot became lost in the dense fog and left his intended course up the Mobile River.
Japan Airlines Flight 123 was a Japan Airlines domestic flight from Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) to Osaka International Airport (Itami). The Boeing 747-SR46 that made this route, registered JA8119, crashed into the ridge of Mount Takamagahara in Ueno, Gunma Prefecture, 100 kilometers from Tokyo, on Monday August 12, 1985. The crash site was on Osutaka Ridge (おすたかのおね, Osutaka-no-One?), near Mount Osutaka. All 15 crew members and 505 out of 509 passengers died, resulting in a total of 520 deaths. It remains the deadliest single-aircraft accident, and the second-deadliest aviation accident after the Tenerife disaster in history, only counting victims on board
During the Olympic Games in Munich, 11 Israeli athletes are held hostage by Palestinian terrorists. They demand the list of Palestine prisoners in exchange for the release of the atheltes. But at Fürstenfeldbruck Airport, a rescue attempt goes wrong and by 12:01 am on the next day, 17 people are dead.
