Tandem Hang Gliding Lesson @ Kagel Mountain 09:40

10 minute version of my first hang gliding flight since 1982. I did this edit to include a lot more of Joe Greblo's instructions to me and more of my flying and ground handling. This flight was on April 29, 2008 at Sylmar Flight Park. See: http://www.windsports.com/index2.html for lessons or http://www.windsports.com/index2.html for more details about the club that overseas this fine soaring site.

  • ……I last flew a hang glider. I used to hang glide from 1973 through 1982 then I stopped. On 4/29/08 at Sylmar Flight Park I took my first tandem flight/lesson with Joe Greblo, lead instructor from WindSports in Sylmar, CA. Our flight lasted about 31 minutes in moderate turbulence with ratty, broken up thermals. Maximum gain was only 500’ before we ran out of lift. The last time I flew at Sylmar was in 1974 on an 18’ Flexi Flyer. I and am now in the process of getting my wings back, thanks in large part to Joe’s patience and excellent teaching skills. Watch and listen, as Joe drills me on proper technique while I'm obviously pretty rusty and gravitate towards my old ways and habits. I have got a lot to learn to get my Hang 3 reinstated and will be using the full 37 minutes video to help remind me along with lots of practice and input from the excellent instructors over the coming months.

  • First 7 of 35 miles - from Bixby Knolls in Long Beach - N. on the Los Angeles River Bike Trail to Imperial Hwy. Lots of interesting scenary and commentary. The next 3 parts continue up the LA River Trail - E. through Whittier Narrows Recreation Area then S. on the San Gabriel River Bike Trail past the Artesia Fwy. The ride was Novemeber 3, 2007, on my Bacchetta Aero recumbent racing bicycle and it was a beautiful, sunny Southern California Saturday. Part 1 of 4. Total time is 37 minutes.
