Sie waren riesig, blitzschnell und toedlich: Flugsaurier. Lange, bevor es Voegel gab, beherrschten sie den Himmel, und das ueberaus erfolgreich - ueber 150 Millionen Jahre. In diesem Zeitraum entwickelten sie eine enorme Artenvielfalt. Waehrend die kleinsten Formen nicht groesser als Spatzen waren, erreichten die groessten Vertreter die Ausmasse eines Kampfflugzeuges. Doch ihre AEra endete abrupt - nur eines der Mysterien um die "Pterosauria". Als das erste Flugsaurierfossil im 18. Jahrhundert in Sueddeutschland gefunden wurde, staunte der Naturforscher Cosimo Collini nicht schlecht. Die Haende dieser Kreatur bestanden aus drei kurzen Fingern und einem vierten, der zehnmal so lang war. Erst Jahre spaeter wurde klar, dass diese ueberlange Konstruktion dieStuetze einer Flughaut darstellte, die das Tier zum Fliegen befaehigte. Seitdem belegten zahlreiche Fossilfunde rund um den Globus die Verbreitung der Pterosauria, doch Aufstieg, Herrschaft und Untergang dieser Giganten waren der Wissenschaft lange ein Raetsel. Neueste Untersuchung zeigen die Riesen nun in einem anderen Licht. Sie waren keineswegs "Prototypen", die mehr schlecht als recht durch die Luft glitten. Im Gegenteil - die Flugkuenste der Urtiere waren perfekt, ihre Manoevrierfaehigkeit nahezu akrobatisch. Ein hoch effizientes Kreislaufsystem mit konstanter Koerpertemperatur, kombiniert mit einem ultraleichten Skelett und einer aeusserst flexiblen Flugmembran waren dafuer die Voraussetzungen. Erstmals wollen nun Spezialisten aus ganz unterschiedlichen Disziplinen gemeinsam einen Flugsaurier rekonstruieren, der fliegen kann. Palaeontologen, die sich normalerweise mit Fossilien befassen, bringen ihr Fachwissen ebenso ein wie Ingenieure, die sonst Segelboote bauen. Der Film begleitet eine abenteuerlich Expedition in die Mongolei zu einem neuen Flugsaurier-Fund. Modernste Computeranimationen (etwa 20 Prozent der Produktion) erwecken die Urtiere wieder zum Leben.
