  • One reason for the big push to overhaul our nation's healthcare system is to cover more people... Donnell Preskey finds out who those uninsured people are in North Dakota here's one woman's story... Who are the uninsured in North Dakota??? They make up 8% of our population or about the size of Bismarck... (Carmen) "I always thought I'd have a job where I could afford insurance." Meet Carmen... she's one of the 52,000 people in the state who does not have health insurance... She's a single woman... going back to school... and no extra time for a job... (Carmen) "I'm working 40 hours a week doing my practicum in addiction counseling. So trying to work on the weekends is almost impossible." It's not the way it's always been or will be in the future... She can't afford to get sick... And with Diabetes and Asthma everyday she's well is a blessing... (Carmen) "I filed bankruptcy in the past year. So going into the hospital would set me back before I can even get started." She takes seven different prescriptions... Luckily she gets the drugs she needs to stay healthy through a Prescription Assistance program... (Carmen) "My medications alone would run me $300-$400 a month." With healthcare reform being the hot topic these days she says she hears many opinions about what to do with the "uninsured".... (Carmen) "There's people like me out there that can't afford health insurance, what are we going to do about it? I hate listening to them, because they're so one tracked minded they don't think about those that can't afford it." But she knows... Carmen will be done with school in April. That's when she hopes to land a full time job be able to afford health coverage and not have to ever worry about scrapping by again... Here's a breakdown of the Uninsured in North Dakota... About 8.2% of North Dakotan's do not have coverage... Which is almost half of the rate of the unisured in the U.S. The uninsured tend to be more in the very rural areas. 72% of the uninsured adults are employed but work in firms with ten or fewer employe

  • You might say Kami Hanson's experience this weekend was a bit like a first year bowler rolling a 300... Maybe a rookie in Major League Baseball tossing a perfect game. That is basically what the senior at Des Lacs-Burlington High School is a rookie in the sport of hunting. This is her first year and it will be one she won't soon forget! This is what she bagged Saturday near Berthold! A bull moose weighing in at about 900 pounds with a 38 inch spread. In her first year, she was lucky enough to get her hunting tag and after weeks of scouting got this big guy. It was a day-long chore getting him loaded up...but certainly worth all the work. (Kami Hanson - DLB Senior) "It is a once in a lifetime opportunity so I will never get another moose in ND and I am the first one in my family. Everyone was excited! I have never even shot a deer...this is my first year applying for anything so this was really exciting and kind of different." Quite the rookie hunting experience! She says they were able to get about 300 pounds of roasts and ground meat from the big guy. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KXMC CBS Bismarck North ]

  • HAVE BEEN ALLOWED NEAR THE MONEY. IT'S ONE OF THE MOST SOPHISTICATED EMERGENCY SYSTEMS IN THE STATE... ...BUT THAT SYSTEM DIDN'T WORK PROPERLY WHEN LOST HIKER MEGUMI YAMAMOTO CALLED FOR HELP. NOW THE SANTA FE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING WHAT WENT WRONG. GADI SCHWARTZ IS LIVE IN SANTA FE WITH WHY IT TOOK A FEW TRIES FOR YAMAMOTO TO GET CONNECTED TO RESCUERS. TODAY THE SANTA FE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYS THE RESCUE EFFORT TO GET TO PICK-UP A STRANDED MEGUMI YAMAMOTO BEGAN WITH A LITTLE CONFUSION. U-N-M GRAD STUDENT MEGUMI YAMAMOTO DIED IN A HELICOPTER CRASH SHORTLY AFTER STATE POLICE SERGEANT ANDY TINGWALL AND OFFICER WESLEY COX PICKED HER UP NEAR THE SANTA FE BALDY. YAMAMOTO CALLED FOR HELP AFTER GETTING SEPARATED FROM HER BOYFRIEND. THAT CALL WENT TO COUNTY DISPATCH -- BUT DIDN'T RING ON THEIR EMERGENCY NUMBER -- WHICH WOULD'VE BEEN ABLE TO GIVE CREWS A VERY GOOD IDEAD OF WHERE SHE WAS BY TRIANGULATING WHERE SHE WAS CALLING FROM. Dispatcher: Are you north or south of Santa Fe? Yamamoto: I really don't know Dispatcher: Did you call 911? Yamamoto: Yes Dispatcher: Ok how many people have you talked to before me? Yamamoto: Many people but always cut off. Backround: I've told her over and over to call 911 Dispatcher: OK are you on I-25 Yamamoto: No national park. DISPATCHERS FROM THE COUNTY WORKED WITH STATE POLICE DISPATCHER TO FIGURE OUT WHERE YAMAMOTO WAS CALLING FROM AFTER SPEAKING WITH HER. SANTA FE SHERIFF GREG SOLANO SAYS THIS IS THE FIRST TIME AN EMERGENCY CALL HAS BEEN DIVERTED TO A NON-EMERGENCY DISPATCH NUMBER -- AND THEY'RE WORKING TO FIX THE GLITCH. SHERIFF STRESSED THAT WHILE THERE WAS SOME CONFUSION WHEN THE CALL FIRST CAME IN -- YAMAMOTO WAS IN CONSTANT CONTACT WITH DISPATCHERS, AND EVENTUALLY [www.clipsyndicate.com | KOB Albuquerque]
