SAN MIGUEL WINS GAME 1 THRILLER OVER GINEBRA Beermen mentor thanks wildcard stint Coach Siot Tanquingcen is convinced their wildcard journey has been a blessing. San Miguel Beer rode the momentum of its wildcard stint, seizing control early and holding off a Barangay Ginebra challenge at the finish in pulling off a 78-77 thriller of a win in the opener of their 2008-09 KFC PBA Philippine Cup best-of-three quarterfinal showdown at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday. "The wildcard really turned out to be a blessing for us. The experience we had there toughened us up for this game," said Tanquingcen after the victory sending the Beermen on the threshold of the semifinal round. "We're not yet out of the woods but we now have a good chance to make the next round. We just have to stay focused. Ginebra is very much capable of coming back," Tanquingcen added. Seigle scored on a short stab on a dish-off by Custodio for the go-ahead basket with time down to 47.9 seconds. The Kings, who picked up their game in the second half largely behind the efforts of Mamaril and Ronald Tubid, had a chance to salvage the game but Jayjay Helterbrand didn't get a decent shot in the face of Custodio's tough defense in the dying seconds. Helterbrand's buzzer-beating attempt went awry, to the disappointment of the predominantly Ginebra crowd that watched the contest. The Kings came alive in the third quarter and threatened to steal the game in surging ahead, 75-74 and 77-76, in the last two minutes of play. The Beermen, however, kept their poise and confidence, going to Custodio and Seigle for the key plays t
