Les services de recherche et de sauvetage ont abandonné les recherches en vue retrouver l'équipage du Cap Blanc, un cargo des îles Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon qui a fait naufrage au large de Terre-Neuve. Le cargo a d'abord chaviré, puis il a coulé mardi après-midi, deux heures seulement après que les sauveteurs soient arrivés sur les lieux. Le naufrage est survenu à 4 milles marins de Marystown. Les quatre membres de l'équipage n'ont pas été retrouvés. Le navire faisait route vers l'archipel français après avoir été chargé à Terre-Neuve d'une cargaison de sel destiné au déneigement des routes. L'opération de recherche a été lancée lorsqu'on s'est rendu compte que le Cap Blanc n'avait pas signalé sa position comme il devait le faire. Les autorités canadiennes ont cependant attendu 10 heures avant d'entreprendre des recherches aériennes. Des hélicoptères Cormorant, un avion Hercules, des navires de la garde côtière et des bateaux de la GRC ont participé aux recherches, ainsi qu'un navire français qui se trouvait à Terre-Neuve. Des marins et un ancien capitaine du Cap Blanc croient que le cargo a chaviré tellement vite que l'équipage n'a pas eu le temps de lancer un signal de détresse. Le Cap Blanc, qui avait quitté le port d'Argentia lundi, était en bon état. Les conditions météorologiques à ce moment, toutefois, étaient mauvaises. Les vents étaient forts. Les secouristes ont entendu de bruit à l'intérieur de l'épave lorsqu'ils ont frappé sur la coque. Le cargo a toutefois coulé avant qu'on puisse entrer à l'intérieur.
