Theatrical trailer for the first Hopalong Cassidy western, HOP-ALONG CASSIDY (later re-titled HOPALONG CASSIDY ENTERS) starring William Boyd. Btween 1935 and 1948 Boyd would star in a total of 66 Hoppy westerns, the last 12 of which he produced himself. After the theatrical market for the Cassidy westerns diminished, he released 52 of the films to television and bacame one of the most iconic figures of the 1950s. Though no new Hopalong Cassidy theatrical features were made, the success of the original films spawned 52 half-hour television programs, a radio series and lucrative merchandising and licensing with perhaps thousands of items bearing the familiar Cassidy image. Theatrical trailer for the classic 1940 Republic Puictures' cliffhanger, MYSTERIOUS DOCTOR SATAN, starring Robert Wilcox, Eduardo Cianelli and Ella Neal. Originally announced as SUPERMAN, the serial was conceived as one of the most ambitious in the studo's history with "The Man of Steel" (rumored to have been played by Tom Tyler) battling the sinister "Dr. Satan", with Henry Brandon already cast to play the club-footed, shrouded master villain replete with horns and an army of robots. Disagreements between DC comics and Republic abruptly caused the arrangement to fall through. The script was hastily rewritten and the masked mortal, "The Copperhead" substituted for Superman, and the serial's scope -- and cost -- greatly reduced. One can only image what might have been... MR. MOTO'S GAMBLE 1938 PETER LORRE TRAILER
Theatrical trailer for the third "Mr. Moto" entry starring Peter Lorre, MR. MOTO'S GAMBLE. This film actually began as CHARLIE CHAN AT RINGSIDE, but when then-Chan Warner Oland (birth name John Verner Olund) suffered a mental breakdown with acute dementia, Fox rewrote the script and included both Key Luke -- as Jimmy Chan -- and Harold Huber -- as Police Lieutenant Riggs -- from the series. Fox then replaced Swedish-born Oland, with Sidney as Chan Chan (ironically, who was also born in Sweden) and resumed the popular Charlie Chan series with CHARLIE CHAN IN HONOLULU (1938). Oland died of bronchial pneumonia in his native Sweden on August 6, 1938 five months after the release of MR. MOTO'S GAMBLE. Serenity is the name of the ship that houses a crew of renegade independents that travel the universe taking odd jobs such as cargo and transportation movers. They even result to robbery to make a living. The ships captain is Malcolm Reynolds and he leads a ragtag crew struggling to make ends meet in a galaxy ruled by a totalitarian regime. I review the film.
