  • The Fitness Challenge that Joe Goldade, Tom Schrader and Perry Olson took part in is over... Joe Goldade was the winner dropping nearly 30 pounds but all of them saw great improvement. Perry Olson shows us his numbers today. (Perry Olson - KX News) Someone had to be last... (Russell Gust) "Bottom of the list...was Perry. His total fitness score improved 13 points." Don't let that frown confuse you...I'm pretty pleased with what I accomplished working out a bit and watching what I was eating...a little at least! For me, the big improvement was seen in my blood work. A few months ago I had a cholesterol level that was way too high especially for someone still shy of 30. That overall cholesterol level dropped from 225 to 189 high to normal. Looking deeper, I saw my LDL or bad cholesterol move from 162 to 119...the best indicator I am indeed healthier. HDL...or good cholesterol, remained right at 49. My fitness results were OK. I improved in areas like the sit and reach testing my flexibility... (Russell) "Hey, look at that! Another inch and a half... (Perry) "Felt like it!" That inch and a half added to my flexibility put me in the above average category nationwide! I'll take that! I was pretty surprised at my increase in the dreaded sit-up. 10 more in a minute this time! And don't worry...you aren't supposed to come all the way to the top! I'm not cheating there. Cheating may have helped with the weights and cardio tests however...I dropped in those areas...still trying to figure that one out! Overall, I improved in overall fitness from average to above average...a pretty good outcome...even if I was last...hey...we can't all be Joe! Now the goal is of course...stay here...or get even healthier...we'll see how that goes! My newfound enjoyment of Drums Alive the class here should help that...Perry Olson, KX News. By the way Perry lost 21 pounds during the challenge, dropping from 242 to 221. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KXMC CBS Bismarck North ]

  • After a long 15 week fitness challenge between Tom, Joe and Perry, Tom is going to share his experience and all that he learned. (Russell Gust, Trinity Health) "Second place, runner up is Tom Schrader (Tom Schrader) First off, I want to congratulate Joe Goldade for winning the fitness challenge. Joe had a 25% increase in overall fitness and I came in second with a very close 23%. We wanted to show you that you could take different paths to fitness. Mine was fairly structured. So I recruited Tina Merck from ATA Martial Arts to be my coach. And the first thing she did was to get me to eat healthy. (Tina Merck, ATA Martial Arts) " Now remember Tom, I wanted you to eat more whole foods, natural foods like fruits and vegetables and then stay away from the bad things like sugar and hydrogenated oil. (Tom Schrader) So lets see how that worked for me. My cholesterol dropped 35 points, my LDL, the bad cholesterol dropped 31 points, my triglycerides were good and my glucose was normal. Tina had me on a well balanced diet but let me have Sundays off to eat whatever I wanted so I wouldn't feel deprived. Tina also set me up with a workout program. I did resistance bands training to develop muscle. I also lifted weights at the YMCA and played lots of handball. Admittedly, I didn't lose as much weight as I wanted to, but I did lose 6.5 pounds of body fat and apparently put on some muscle because when compared to others in my age group, I placed in the 92nd percentile in the bench press test. Oh yea, I beat Perry and Joe on this one. And finally, my flexibility improved 3 inches adn that is where I had my biggest gain, with body fat loss a close second. It wasn't just me, we all won. Our bloodwork was better (Russell Gust Trinity Health) All of your blood test results are incredible (Tom Schrader) And we all achieved our goals. I couldn't have done it without my coaching, but if you find out what works for you, you can become healthier too. I'm TomI came in a close second to Joe GoldadeSchrader KXMC News.
