  • On a day when many of us will be opening gifts and spending time with family the U.S. Senate passed a bill that will bring sweeping changes to the nation's health care system. Every Democrat and Independent voted for it and not a single Republican supported the legislation. (Vice President Joe Biden) "The yeas are 60 and neas are 39...the bill, as amended, is passed." Both North Dakota Senators Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan cast votes in favor of the legislation that would bring major changes to the health care system in the country. Polling over the last few weeks showed that 62% of North Dakotan's opposed the Senate healthcare bill, while 27% supported the bill according to the Zogby poll. But Senator Conrad says it is a good bill that will be positive for North Dakota. (Sen. Kent Conrad - (D) North Dakota) "Sen. Dorgan and I got the Frontier States Amendment that will benefit a handful of states that have been the lowest reimbursed states in the country under Medicare. For ND it will mean an additional 50 million for hospitals and another 16 million for doctors who treat medicare patients because they have been getting paid below cost for their medicare patients." Next up before anything becomes law, the Senate and House must come to an agreement on a final bill that would have to pass both chambers before heading to the President's desk for a final signature.
