The last two nights we have taken you to Williston State College where the campus is growing with new facilities. The new Career and Technical Center along with a new science facility are designed to improve the quality of education and get more students on campus. But where will those students live? Housing in the area is in high demand. Perry Olson shows us... This is an open area right now...but it will soon be home to well a home for students that should be, in the words of project coordinator Hunter Berg stunning... (Hunter Berg - Williston State College) "The wings will run north and south and another east and west with a large atrium in the center that is mostly glass. How it is designed...the visual is pretty appealing." Right now, WSC only has 120 beds on campus for students this will double that, plus more growing from 120 to 298! It means growth can and hopefully will happen... (Hunter Berg - Williston State College) "We only have about 250 students on campus. We want that to grow and we think this new hall will get kids to campus and stay on campus. That makes it...people on the campus makes it." WSC's online program has boomed now the goal is to make sure the on campus population does too meaning this new housing comes at a great time. Plus, finding a house or apartment in Williston is extremely tough with all the oil related activity in the region...this will guarantee a spot for Teton students... (Hunter Berg - Williston State College) "At this point housing in Williston in general is tough to come by. When we had record enrollments we could house them in apartments that were open, but that has changed, now there are not open apartments for housing." Come 2011 there will be a home for student here. Perry Olson, KX News. The new dorms will carry a price tag of nine-point-three million dollars. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KXMC CBS Bismarck North ]
With one of the first snow-less Thanksgivings in recent memory behind us...many are looking toward December for the official start of winter...and perhaps the first major snow. However, that lack of winter weather is making things run a little differently at Bottineau Winter Park. Catherine Ross shows us how the employees are preparing for ski season under some unusual circumstances. All the pieces of the puzzle are coming together at Bottineau Winter Park for the winter season...but looking around this week...one major element is nowhere to be found. (Brad Knudson / Bottineau Winter Park) "After a month ago when we had six inches of snow on the ground, I really thought we'd be in business by now." But what seemed like an early start to winter transformed into an unseasonably warm fall...yet still, he admits, it's a bit easier to get last-minute work done outside in above-freezing temperatures, so when the season hits, they're ready. (Brad Knudson / Bottineau Winter Park) "Wen the cold weather does get below 20 degrees, we can hit the switches and start making snow as fast as we can. It's kind of like baking a cake. We build the cake first, and we hope mother nature will put the frosting on the top of it." But it's a waiting game until then: Knudson says rushing to make snow on warm ground can create run-off and damage the slopes for the rest of the season, so for now, patience is the name of the game. (Brad Knudson / Bottineau Winter Park) "We could have made snow a week ago, but with 50 and 60 degree weather, and the ground still warm, we would have melted from both directions." And though they've had to open a little later in seasons past, Knudson is confident just as many folks will hit the slopes this winter as in years before. (Brad Knudson / Bottineau Winter Park) "It's never hurt us to be open a little later; if we build it, they'll come." And if one thing's for sure in North Dakota, it's that winter will *also* come...and Knudson says they hope to be up and running at Bottineau Winter Park by the first
