Fire did heavy damage to a Minot home today, chasing four people into the cold night. Just before 2 am, Martha Anderson awoke to the smell of smoke in her family's Northwest Avenue home. The fire appears to have been caused by the building's chimney system, which sparked the wood framing surrounding the steel structure. Minot Fire Crews responded to the home shortly after 2 am and upon arrival, flames were burning on the exterior of the home's north wall, before quickly spreading to the building's interior. Battalion Chief John Hocking says Leonard and Martha Anderson and their 2 sons escaped the house without injury, and crews had the fire completely extinguished by 6 am. Neighbor, Elaine Metz, was awoken by the commotion, and says firefighters did a great job of getting the blaze under control. (Elaine Metz, Neighbor) "I noticed the flames through my dining room window as I was halfway down my stairs, so I got my husband awake and we went to see if there was anything we can do for the family if anyone was home, and they said no one was inside. I asked them how it happened and they said it was a chimney fire, but they got the fire under control, they kept it contained to the one house, just in the back of the house, so it was pretty good on the fire department, they kept it good." A Minot Fire Marshall is conducting a further investigation of the fire, but current damage to the home is estimated to be around 100 thousand dollars. He's not the first Richter to wrestle for St. Mary's... but sophomore Jason Richter might be the one that stands out the most. At a young age, he's already overcome an obstacle most us might never know...and has overcome a few foes on the mats in the process. "He's a sophomore?and he's already wrestling varsity! Yet, that's just one of many reasons that many are impressed with Jason Richter. (Jerry Richter:) You don't start out at the top and that is the beautiful thing about wrestling, to be able to get up there to where they are competing and then winning their matches. (Brock Krumm:) You can just see it when he's out there wrestling. He knows what to do naturally and it falls into place for him and I think he has got a good future in wrestling. The one-on-one atmosphere isn't the easiest thing?especially when you're wrestling with one leg?and that's Jason Richter's reality. (Jason Richter:) I was three years old and a lawnmower cut it off when I slipped and it went under a lawn mower and yeah, it was pretty bad. (Jerry Richter:) He has to wrestle an entirely different style, so he starts on one knee and stays on one knee and wrestles off of that and there is a little bit of an advantage to it. You are in a lower level and guys are awkward coming up to him and saying 'Ok, how do I wrestle him?' So, usually, we can get the first few points. (Jason Richter:) I just have to use it my advantage and use moves that work with me and just one leg and it makes it harder for the other opponent because they don't know what to do really. Test results might not show it, but wrestling is in Richter's blood. His brother and cousin are two of his teammates, And six of his uncle's were stars at St. Mary's, including the current head coach, (Jerry Richter:) It has been a joy to be able to coach him, but it has been a challenge at the same time as you have to come up with a whole new type of scheme of things and figuring out how to compete missing that lower leg and so it has been fun trying to figure what is the best way and he
Fire breaks out in Mandan this afternoon. This afternoon crews arrived at this home at 1404 9th Ave NW only to find a single story home with fire coming from the rear roof area. Fire Chief Steve Nardalo says no fire was found inside the home. He says it appears to have all been in the attic area. He says currently the home appears to have minimal smoke damage.
