  • India is under pressure to commit to binding targets to reduce its carbon footprint. But with more and more people upgrading from two wheels to four, there is concern about an increase in emissions. The WHO estimates that nearly 120,000 Indians die each year from polluted air, out of two million worldwide. He's one of a rising number of young middle class Indians with money to spend. Last financial year just over 1.5 million new cars were sold, making the country one of the fastest growing car markets. But despite the sheer volume of vehicles on the roads and concern about its impact on pollution levels, what Puneet wants is a good deal and a fuel efficient car that can cope with the stop-start of chronic congestion. SOUNDBITE 1: Puneet Masih, customer. (English, 10 secs) "It's got a lot of cabin space, which gives you a lot of leg room space and the fuel efficiency is quite good. That's the main reason I'm here and it's a pretty decent city car." Traffic jams are a part of daily life in cities like Mumbai, but there's concern pollution is directly affecting people's health. At this chest clinic in the city centre an increasing number of patients are being diagnosed with asthma and bronchitis. The doctor in charge here is clear about what's to blame. SOUNDBITE 2: Dr Pramod Niphadkar, Chest Physician. (English, 12 secs) "See, by and large, if you see the car pollution is the main and the sole factor which is responsible for the increase in the respiratory complaints of patients." The country's car manufacturers are making efforts to go green, but as the middle class continue to seek a symbol of their new-found wealt

  • The Pilkington glass plant in Northwood was awarded nearly $700,000 in grants to help construct a $1.4 million solar panel field. The funding is part of $13 million in federal stimulus money that was awarded to Ohio for alternative energy projects. When completed the solar field will supply about 65-percent of the plant's normal power needs. The panels are expected to be purchased from First Solar in Perrysburg Township. • albuquerque's brown cloud. here's a look at the thick -- dingy smog bank from the early 19-90's. clearing the haze has become a high priority since then... ...but a viewer questions if one of albuquerque's big efforts to clean up the air has fizzled out. a viewer writes: "what happened to no burn nights?" kayla anderson is live in downtown albuquerque tonight with the answer.// the city says it's no burn program is still in effect-- as a control strategy to keep the air in albuquerque as clean as possible. but, if you're worried your fireplace could be bringing the brown cloud back... we found another solution for you. the last time the city issued a no burn night for fireplaces and wood burning stoves was back in 2007. minute thumbnail 06:07 pm "the smoke imparticulates are trapped in that warm layer of air and they are unable to disperse and that creates hazy conditions in the city." the perfect recipe for a city- wide no burn calls for calm conditions, light winds and dry air. weather like that traps in the bad pollutants that are emitted from fireplaces and wood burning stoves-- creating a hazy cloud over the city. but a lack of those weather conditions -- combined with improved vehicle emissions standards has helped the air stay cleaner. however fireplaces and wood stoves can still pump out pollution. "those are the devices will contribute to the particulate pollution in the city which we are trying to hold down." but one expert says your fireplace doesn't have to be toxic-- to you-- or the environment. "it reduces about 70 to 80% of the pollution from a fireplace." minute thumbnail 06:08 pm ron allred is the president of clear skies unlimited. his product removes pollution from fireplaces and wood burning stoves. "these function like a catalytic converter in your car." the product-- which looks like a sponge-- takes 15 minutes to install. it'll cost you 500 dollars to retrofit your fireplace with one-- and about 400 if you have a wood burning stove the retrofitting kits have to be replaced every 3-5 years-
