GREENVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - A gripping goodbye in Greenville Friday night as the town sends several of its fighting men and women off to war. The tough farewells made even harder by the upcoming holidays. Family, friends say goodbye and honor the 150 people of the 1073rd who will leave for a 12 month tour of duty. Sgt. First class Andrew Lytle said "Actually for me, its bittersweet. Some of my best in the unit are leaving and I'm not going with them. So it's bittersweet. I'm going to miss them. I want to be with them". Amy Lytle agreed. "It is really hard. We've been involved with this unit for 20 years and a lot of our friends and family are here...and it's really emotional especially around the holidays". Some who are heading to Iraq say the support of the community makes it a little easier to leave before the holidays. "I just love this community. They're always really good at getting out, and showing their support. Everyone was honking their horns today as they drove by, so its really refreshing". "Most of all, I know that this decision asks even more of you," said President Obama speaking directly to cadets. Almost all will eventually join troops in the warzone, who also heard Obamas decision, "To send an additional 30-thousand U.S. troops to Afghanistan. The Smith family in New York is split over the President's words. With her grandson just shipped off to Iraq, June Smith said, "I feel that Obama's doing the best that he can in the situation he was left in." However, Jamila Smith, whose nephew is serving in Iraq said, The reason we voted Obama into office is because he was gonna go into the process of bringing them home." Today in hearings to fund the war plan, Secretary Of State Clinton, Defense Secretary Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Mullen defend it to critics. Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold said, "I think it's possible it'll be a bipartisan vote that could prevent such funding." The President will need GOP backing. President Barack Obama said, "After 18 months, our troops will begin to come home." Arizona Senator John McCain said, "I'm most concerned about sending the wrong signal that we're leaving on an arbitrary date." The President's War Commander General McChrystal sounds satisfied, in a statement saying, The President has provided me with a clear military mission and the resources to accomplish our task."
