Pepperspray Productions'

Pepperspray Productions' "Indymedia Presents"

Pepperspray Productions is an independent video activist collective located in Seattle, Washington. We formed shortly after the Seattle WTO protests in response to the Independent Media Center's call, "don't hate the media, be the media!". We believe that the Corporate Media is not telling us the whole story, and that the people must make our own media if we want our voices to be heard. As a collective we cover Seattle-area demonstrations for social and environmental justice as well as progressive/radical political conferences and events. Pepperspray members can also be seen at National and International protest actions. Don't hate the media, Be the media! www.PeppersprayProductions.org

  • Recorded immediately after the conclusion of the Seattle International Film Festival, "Indymedia Presents this week devotes the whole show to a review of interesting films worth looking for. One of the producers of this show, Randy Rowland, gives us his impressions of three movies that played in the Film Festival, as well as his take on Michael Moore's "Sicko." http://www.seattlefilm.com The movies reviewed (along with the trailers for each feature) are as follows: -The Violin--a Mexican film unlikely to get much of a commercial US release, but one Randy liked best in the Festival. http://www.seattlefilm.org/festival/film/detail.aspx?id=16911&fid=32 -Goya?s Ghosts--filmed in Spain, in English, it is clearly aimed at US audiences, with a big message from across the Atlantic: "Hey America, confessions extracted by torture don't count!" This was another favorite from the Film Festival and it is now opening across the US. http://www.goyasghoststhefilm.com http://www.seattlefilm.org/festival/film/detail.aspx?i...

  • n this episode we bring you a piece sent to us by our friends in San Diego, who have a great show called "Alternate Focus," which mostly trains their investigative lens on issues related to the Middle East. They do excellent work and this piece is really good. "The Bases Are Loaded" is their look at US military bases in Iraq. http://alternatefocus.org Will the U.S. ever leave Iraq? Official policy promises an eventual departure, while warning of the dire consequences of a "premature" withdrawal. But while Washington equivocates, facts on the ground tell another story. Independent journalist Dahr Jamail, and author Chalmers Johnson, are discovering that military bases in Iraq are being consolidated from over a hundred to a handful of permanent US "megabases" with lavish amenities. While US officials try to obscure much of what is taking place through denials and quibbles over the definition of "permanent," this excellent video cuts through the crap. Gary Hart, James Goldsborough, Nadia Keilani, Raed Jarrar...

  • "Gigante: Despierta! (Giant: Awake!)" is a compilation DVD that contains a number of video segments concerning the historic 2006 mobilization for immigrant rights that swept across the US. While mainstream news media predictably covered the marches with a mix of surprise, ignorance, and racism, grassroots media activists were there to document the voices and stories behind this mass movement. PepperSpray covered a number of stories during this time, and now we bring you some from the DVD "Gigante: Despierta!" We contributed footage to this collaborative project. Those who are involved in organizing around these issues, as well as those who want to know more about the issues are encouraged to check out this compilation DVD. To find it, go to the website: http://www.gigantedespierta.org . Selections featured: -intro -- a good montage -Brian Liola, “Si Se Puede” -- takes you into the lives of two immigrant brothers. These are real people, living real lives, and in their story you can see much of the larg...

  • Indymedia videographer Brad Will was recently killed in Oaxaca, while filming the People's struggles in that embattled Mexican city. IP #230 starts with the last thing Brad Will saw before dying. We bring you about 10 minutes of footage taken from his video camera. He was filming the moment he was shot. To keep this from being any more gruesome than it needs to be, there is no on-screen notice at the moment of impact. We bring you this footage as part of our commemorative to him--he died to get these shots--but also because it is exactly what we have always promised, "televising the revolution." This piece is grainy, it was transmitted by way of the internet, but profound. There are some interviews with citizens of Oaxaca, describing the terror they have been living with, and then Brad moves closer, to a battle between gun-toting thugs, and a community whose weapons are firecrackers and slingshots. It is a peephole into what happens if a community can't just call the police when a man with a gun starts sh...

  • "KPCN--Radio Movemiento" is PepperSpray Collective member Bill Birney's piece on the efforts to build a low power FM station in the Chicano town of Woodburn, Oregon. Bill traveled to Woodburn three times to make this piece. He led the first PepperSpray team which went to Woodburn and out into the fields to interview farmworkers, making an advance video that served to build media interest in the Radio KPCN project. Then he went back to cover the Prometheus "barn-raising" weekend, where activists converged and merged with the community, to build the station in a single weekend. Finally, Bill returned to Woodburn for the final occasion, the celebration of the station commencing regular programing. His excellent and uplifting report fills this week's whole program, and is the final of three pieces PepperSpray has produced on this topic. Pepperspray Productions formed shortly after the WTO protests in Seattle, in response to the Independent Media Center's call, "don't hate the media, be the media". We believe ...

  • MLK Day in Seattle is always big. This year Lt. Ehren Watada spoke to an enthusiastic crowd, who gave him a standing ovation before and after he spoke. Before the Lt. spoke, King County Councilman Larry Gossett addressed the crowd, telling of the time when he was in high-school, going to Franklin HS, where this year's rally was taking place. Gossett recounted how the Black Student Union held a 1968 sit-down protest at the school after the Principal sent 2 Black female students home because they wore their hair in afros. They were instructed to not come back until they "looked lady-like." Gossett told the story to point out how far the school had come. Another lesson could be that he went to jail for justice in 1968, but it certainly did not ruin his life. Lt. Watada faces jail time and much has been said of how it will ruin his life. Not true! www.thankyoult.org www.couragetoresist.org Pepperspray Productions formed shortly after the WTO protests in Seattle, in response to the Independent Media Center's c...

  • CITIZENS HEARING ON THE LEGALITY OF U.S. ACTIONS IN IRAQ: The Case of Lt. Ehren Watada JANUARY 20-21, 2007 Tacoma, Washington, USA "In an unprecedented two-day Citizens' Hearing held over January 20-21, more than 600 citizens joined a distinguished tribunal panel in listening to testimony about the legality of the US invasion of Iraq. The Citizens' Hearing was convened to present evidence that Lt. Ehren Watada would have presented in his February 5 court martial on the question that the military ruled barred from entry on Jan. 16 - the question of the Iraq War's legality. Lt. Watada has repeatedly asserted that because the Iraq War is illegal, it is his duty to refuse orders to deploy. He is the Army's first commissioned officer to take such a stand." • We bring you the last speech Lt. Watada gave before facing court martial (which as you may know, ended in a mistrial, when the military judge pulled the plug on the trial after the prosecution rested their shaky case, rather than risk a Watada victory. We will bring you all the details on that in the near future). The Saturday night before Watada's trial began on Feb 5th, Lt. Watada appeared for what most folks thought would be his last public event before going to prison. Patricia Boiko was there to capture the event, so thanks to her, and Winning Pictures, we bring you this moving speech. Lt. • Pepperspray Productions "Indymedia Presents": #242 Recruiter station shut down. Yes its true. Sometimes we win. In this case a demonstration, led by Iraq Vets Against the War (IVAW), marching by the military recruiter stations in the Central District of Seattle diverted into the parking lot and forced the recruiters to close the office. Even more amazing, the outnumbered police decided to defuse the situation by removing their forces from in front of the recruiter's storefront. Its worth watching just to see the look of puzzlement on a reporter's face when the police, who moments before were brandishing pepperspray, abruptly abandon the recruiter station. This action footage is set to David Rovic's powerful song "We'll shut them down." (check out his website at www.davidrovics.com) Next we feature an interview and a couple rap pieces performed by Son, who was in the Seattle area to support Lt. Watada. This is a powerful political rapster, worth checking out, both on the show this week, and on his website:...

  • The Seattle Times came out with an editorial calling for Watada's conviction. Lt. Watada faces not only charges of missing movement but also several "Conduct Unbecoming" charges stemming from speeches he gave. It has been a while in America since somebody went to jail for giving a speech, but that is the situation with Lt. Watada. Give a speech, go to jail. One of the "criminal" speeches he is charged with giving was to a veterans convention. We start off with that speech. You be the judge; hear the speech and decide if a crime was committed. I sincerely doubt if the editors at the Seattle Times who called for Watada's conviction had even heard the speech, or seen it in print. Yet there they were--aping, chanting for a conviction like a Greek chorus of harpies. We present the speech, uncut. Be inspired, we were. www.thankyoult.org www.couragetoresist.org We follow this up with footage from the FTA tours that occurred in the early 70s. • Here's what is on "Indymedia Presents" #247: Northwest Neighbors For Peace hosted a presentation by Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer entitled "Where Peace & Environment Meet," Our friends from www.livingfree.org sent us the video of that presentation, which we edited into something that would fit on our half-hour show. This presentation is startling in two respects: First, it cites the top NASA climate scientist as saying that we have 10 years to SOLVE global warming, (not ten years to decide whether to do anything) or there will be irreversible changes that will lead to the hottest global temperatures in millions of years, and the die-off of 50% of the species on earth. Heavy stuff from the top guy at NASA, a fellow the Bush administration keeps trying to silence, but who apparently won't shut up. As Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer puts it, the danger is that we won't run out of oil soon enough to save the planet! But he points out that we are "fortunate" to live in the most pivotal moment in human history, that we still hav...
