The FBI isn't finished with the notorious South Valley "Los Padillas" gang— the investigation continues after the arrests of two accused gang leaders. The FBI says more arrests are possible as agents and local cops continue to break up the family-run gang, and its criminal network. Accused gang kingpins Jerry Padilla, Jr., and his son Jerry Padilla III remain in federal custody on drug charges. FBI agents and local cops raided Padilla's Paint & Body shop on Isleta on Thursday morning, along with a Padilla residence nearby. Agents say they found an abundance of narcotics, along with half a million dollars in cash buried on the properties. Police say the gang has operated in the South Valley and beyond for many years, smuggling heroin, cocaine and marijuana. FBI special agent Darrin Jones said, "As far as size goes and the number of members it wasn't a particularly large group in that regard - although I will say the volume in drugs and money that they were trafficking is substantial." Another gang leader, Jeffrey Padilla, Jerry Jr.'s brother, is serving prison time for two murders, and gang godfather Jerry Padilla Sr. was convicted of dealing heroin three times. "It has taken us longer with this particular group because of their notorious reputation for violence and intimidation - perhaps a little harder to get the sources of intelligence we needed to bring this group in," Jones said. The FBI investigation is part of the Safe Streets Task Force that includes state and local cops. The probe started more than a year ago, and continues to go on. The contract for Albuquerque's red light cameras is up in less than two weeks, so we asked the new mayor whether the cameras will stay, or if he'll get rid of them. Friday was Mayor Richard Berry's first meeting with his staff to discuss the future of the red light camera intersections. He says his decision will come down to one thing: Safety. The mayor is tackling one of the most controversial legacies of his predecessor in his first week on the job. Mayor Berry said, "We started today, we're gonna take a look at the statistics. The red light camera program, in my opinion, needs to be about safety." Berry says the team looking in to the program includes new public safety chief Darren White, police chief Ray Schultz, and the city's legal department. He says the team wants to take the time to crunch the data, and has not made a decision on the cameras' future. Berry said, "Which intersections are safer? Are there some that aren't? Is it making a positive effect overall on a safety basis, and once again that's the first step." The city's contract with Redflex, the company that operates the cameras, is up on December 14, so there is a looming deadline as the new team looks at the photo enforcement. The cameras could stay, they could go, but Mayor Berry says scaling them back could be another possibility. "Once again, they all tie back to the safety side and let's see what they're doing on the side of safety. Whether they're being effective, how can we make them more about safety, what intersections need improvement , what intersections aren't working," Berry said. If the city doesn't make a decision by December 14, Berry said he was unsure if the cameras could be shut off on that day. Berry said his team will start looking into contractual issues next week.
