An Albuquerque city employee receives his fifth DWI, causing Mayor Richard Berry to examine, and possibly amend, the current city policy. Last week, 50-year-old James Storey was pulled over in his personal vehicle and arrested by Albuquerque police for drinking and driving. Storey, who has worked for the city for 12 years as a maintenance man for the animal welfare department, also drives a city-issued vehicle. But starting Tuesday, he’ll be cleaning kennels at the city's animal shelters while an internal review is conducted. He has been on paid administrative leave since his arrest. Even though Storey's arrest was off the clock, it raises the question of whether city employees who have been convicted of drunk driving should be able to drive city-issued vehicles while on the job. City officials say Mayor Berry is having his lawyers look into the current policy, and then will decide if a change needs to be made. City spokesman, Chris Ramirez: "It boils down to a public safety issue, if he's on his 5th DWI arrest, he's currently in the adjudication process with the courts, as an administration, we feel that he should not be driving that city issued vehicle, and that's the precedent that we're setting."
