Judging by the number of men and women in uniform today at Wal Mart, you might have suspected something was wrong. But it's actually part of a yearly program doing something very right. "Shop with a Cop" is an annual event that pairs Minot Air Force Base and Minot Police officers with children of single-parent families. The shopping spree is also in conjunction with the "Companions for Children" program. Kids get to enjoy a meal with their law enforcement partner, before hitting the aisles to pick out 150 dollars worth of gifts. Minot Police Sargeant, Paul Burns, has helped organize the event since it began seven years ago. He says it's something kids definitely enjoy, but it's also an unforgettable experience for officers. (Sgt. Paul Burns, Minot Police Dept.) "We can give these children a better Christmas, and just to see their faces when their buying their own gifts, I mean, we've had kids walk out of here with bikes, skateboards, video games. This way, they get to leave here feeling great, which in turn, we feel great too." Around 60 children participated in this year's event, which was made possible by several community businesses, including Wal Mart, Pepsi, and Frito Lay. Misa Maruyama, Eyewitness News 4; Taryn Bianchin, KOB.com The family of Lawrence Vargas, who was shot to death last year, reached out to the Trujillo family, whose baby was murdered earlier this month. This morning at 11, the Vargas’s offered their strength and support to the Trujillo’s while presenting the child’s mother with a one thousand dollar check. The Vargas’s lost their 23-year-old son during a July 2008 shooting at an Albuquerque parking garage. Ashley Trujillo is the mother of baby Trinity Rains, who was shot to death three weeks ago. Police say the baby's father killed Trinity because he didn't want to see Trujillo move on with another man. Although the recent weeks have been horrendous, through her faith Trujillo says she's found forgiveness. “We can not judge people because we make mistakes too, even though some are greater, some fight bigger demons,” Trujillo said. She hopes her story will help other women. “No one deserves to stay in the dark too long. It's time that each of us reaches a hand to someone in the dark and pulls them out before it's too late.” Trujillo says she isn't allowed to speak to Rains while he's behind bars but wouldn't do it, even if she could. Christopher Rains is scheduled to make another court appearance Monday morning. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KOB Albuquerque]

Albuquerque police are turning to Twitter to help crack down on a rash of car thefts. The department says it's been swamped with theft calls, because as the mercury drops, more criminals are stealing cars left warming up in driveways. Police are now posting information about those stolen cars on Twitter, in the hopes that their Tweets will draw your help. Albuquerque Police Spokeswoman Nadine Hamby said Saturday, "The license plate is on that vehicle. The description is on that vehicle. So, if you see it, you can call 911 and say 'I just saw this vehicle at that intersection' and we're able to make a quicker response." [www.clipsyndicate.com | KOB Albuquerque]
