For those who do not live in the Rio Grande valley, the river with the same name, is just a water barrier with Mexico; but for small town police officers like Joe Cantu of La Joya, Texas, the Rio Grande is also a last line of protection. [www.clipsyndicate.com | FOX KRIV Houston, TX]

  • Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry is planning his first budget based on an estimated budget deficit of $19 million despite warnings that the shortfall could reach $30 million. Berry says he will propose no furloughs for city employees and no increases in either taxes or fees. Instead, he has proposed making up the shortage through cost reductions. Each department head other than public safety has been told to cut their depart budgets by two percent. There will be no increase in the number of police officers on the street. Berry has also stopped a program putting logos on city vehicles. Berry says that he has already saved the city money by trimming the size of his staff. City Councilor Isaac Benton has said that he believes the city’s budget deficit is closer to $30 million. He has called for furloughs for city employees. Berry says if the shortfall begins approaching $30 million he’ll review the city’s budget plan at that time. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KOB Albuquerque]
