In 200 8, Albuquerque Police Department reported 40 homicides . While police don't have the exact numbers for 2009 just yet, it looks like the number of violent deaths are up from last year, and that's not factoring in the 12 victims found burried on the West Mesa. In 24 years with the department, police spokeswoman Nadine Hamby says she could not recall a year where there was as many child fatalities, reporting six of the 2009 deaths were children. Two of the cases in particular put Albuquerque in the national spotlight. In May, police arrested Tiffany Toribio for suffocating her three-year-old son, then burying him at an Albuquerque park. Then another heart-wrenching murder took place in December, when police arrested Christopher Rains for shooting his 9-month-old daughter in the head. In 2008, the department had an 80% solvency rate, roughly equal to the cases solved in 2009, but Hamby notes it has been a tough year for detectives within the department. This year's murder count also leaves out another high profile case involving children, where the bodies of a father and his three young boys were found submerged in a car at the bottom of Cochiti Lake, reported missing since 2001.
