When police or hospital staff or other essential workers are stranded at home, it's more than an inconvenience - it can mean someone in trouble won't get the help needed. That's where local snowmobile clubs step in to help - by delivering workers to their jobs and sometimes taking patients where they need to go. Jim Olson reports. When the call comes, these guys are ready to respond. (Sherman Pladsen, Dakota Trail Blazers) "Hauling people around, we've been hauling doctors, people from the police department wherever they have to go." (Dean Forbes, Magic City Driftbusters) "We had to take a couple deputies on North Hill and then the other ones have been picking people up and bringing them to the police department. And we took a lady from ER up to Manor Care." Sherman Pladsen and Dean Forbes are volunteers with local snowmobile clubs who've spent the past day hitting the snow-covered roads of Minot, getting people with critical jobs to their work. (Sherman Pladsen, Dakota Trail Blazers) "We've been at it since 1:30 - that's when I got called in." These guys picked me up this morning and delivered me to work - and we even got stuck once. It's the kind of storm snowmobilers look forward to. (Sherman Pladsen, Dakota Trail Blazers) "This ranks right up there with the best of them - it's been a lot of years since we had one like this." (Dean Forbes, Magic City Driftbusters) "I remember ones like this when I was a kid - we haven't had many since then." (Sherman Pladsen, Dakota Trail Blazers) "I've been having fun." (Dean Forbes, Magic City Driftbusters) "It's fun!" Having fun while doing some important work to keep a snowbound city covered with emergency services. Jim Olson, KX News. It's a Christmas most people will remember for years, but unfortunately, one many would also like to forget. Two full days of blizzard conditions have blocked countless roads and shut down nearly all business throughout the area. The weather caused Minot snow plows to shut down for several hours, making travel nearly impossible in, and around town. Minot Police Sargeant, Chad Eagleson, says it's been a battle for officers and other emergency personnel to even make it to work themselves. He says plows spent most of today clearing snow along Minot's main roadways, but the constant wind made clearing paths difficult, as drifting filled-in many of the gaps. Eagleson says it's been a challenge assisting any vehicles stuck in the snow, so his best advice to residents is to remain at home. (Sgt. Chad Eagleson, Minot Police Dept.) "One point tonight, where three of our patrol vehicles were actually stuck in our parking lot, making it impossible to get around town. We have had a group of volunteer snowmobile clubs come down and assist us tremendously overnight, by getting people to and from as best we could with the change over in shifts and things like that, getting emergency personnel and P.D. as well into some of the hospitals. We are however, not providing rides, you know, we're not a taxi service at this point." Eagleson hopes to see a dramatic change in road conditions once the weather is lifted, but says it will take plow crews several hours, and possibly days, to clear many streets.
