  • It’s a state fund meant to help low-income drunk drivers afford court-ordered ignition interlocks. That fund is drying up, and now there are fears that when the money runs out more drunk drivers will be on the road. Every year in New Mexico roughly 3,000 people claim they can’t afford ignition interlocks. So the state turns to the indigent interlock fund to help cover the cost. But as Eyewitness News 4 reported Friday, that fund is nearly empty and now the people who install interlocks are being told they don’t have to install it if a driver can’t pay for it. Wong says he is frustrated with the state because he says interlock businesses have always been told they can not deny indigent clients. Now he’s worried if there’s no money some people will take a risk. “If they can’t afford it, they may go underground. They may just say, ‘Forget it. I’m gonna drive anyway. I’m gonna take my chances,’ and then we may have someone out there that’s potentially dangerous,” said Wong. The letter also says the state is taking a closer look at how people clai
