Good News: giving back to area families for the holiday [www.clipsyndicate.com | WUPW FOX Toledo, OH]
Good afternoon and thanks for joining us, Catherine Ross has the weekend off. Securing a place to live has been a growing problem for many individuals and families throughout the area- and members of Minot's Housing Authority say the problem will continue to grow, as long as the cost of rent does the same. Each year, the Housing Authority provides rental assistance to hundreds of low income families. Executive Director, Tom Pearson, says as the number of people asking for help and the cost of living has increased, their ability to provide assistance has greatly decreased. A majority of their funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Pearson says many communities are facing this same dilemma. HUD is currently conducting a survey to determine where fair market rent should be set for our community. Pearson hopes their results will be positive for Minot and its surrounding area. (Tom Pearson, Minot Housing Authority) "As federal programs are being cut, dollars are getting tougher and you're gonna be taking money from one community to put into another, somebody else is going to lose money, and that normally does not happen. But it's going to be an interesting process, we will try to get more dollars coming into our community, but there's no guarantee that we're going to see that." The Minot Housing Authority currently serves over 740 individuals through their rental assistance program, but Pearson says if current trends continue, that number could drop to around 720 by the end of 2010. If congress passes some form of healthcare legislation, it will affect all of us in one way or another. Today, North Dakota employers got a chance to see what is in the bill that will affect their business. Nandan Kenkeremath (ken-care-a-math) with Leading Edge Policy and Stragey reviewed some of the particulars of the bill and let the employers know what impacts the bill will have on benefits packages they offer to workers. (Kelvin Hullet/ Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce) "What do the employer mandates mean. Whats the payroll tax proposed and how would that scale out depending on size of employee base and those sorts of things. what will employers be required to provide to employees and those sorts of things." Hullet says more than one hundred local employers attended today's event. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KXMC CBS Bismarck North ]

BERRY IS SCRAPPING HIS PREDECCESOR'S PLAN TO HIRE ONE HUNDRED NEW COPS - THE MAYOR SAYING THAT WOULD COST THE CITY MORE THAN EIGHT AND A HALF MILLION DOLLARS. - THE POLICE FORCE TO REMAIN AT ELEVEN HUNDRED COPS. " I've directed my public safety director and my chief of police to look for ways to take those eleven hundred officers and get more officers on the streets - they are doing that." WHAT'S DRIVING THE SHORTFALL - IN THE RECESSION PEOPLE HAVE LESS MONEY AND ARE SPENDING LESS - SO GROSS RECEIPTS TAXES ON GOODS AND SERVICES ARE DOWN. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KOB Albuquerque]
Your New Mexico driver's license is okay to use at the airport and for other holiday travel, at least until 2011. Today the Department of Homeland Security extended the deadline to 2011 after 46 states and U.S. territories notified the Government they would not be in compliance with the law requiring states to have tougher standards on their licenses. It was feared by this December 31st, New Mexico, along with numerous other states, would not be in compliance with the federal Real ID act and driver’s licenses would be denied at airports, with passports needed to fly even within the U.S. Current federal legislation seeks to replace Real ID with streamlined changes, dubbed “Pass ID.” But even if the new bill is adopted, it still may require someone be legally in this country before they can get a driver's license. New Mexico currently permits illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses. The NM Department of Tax and Revenue, responsible for issuing licenses in the state, reports it's likely congress will now do away with Real ID. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KOB Albuquerque]
