We're about to ring in 2010, but financial experts say it's important to tie up the loose ends of 2009. Wagner Financial Services' accountant Russ Schick says people should start gathering all of their documents. In just a couple of days, the I-R-S will begin sending tax return forms. He says its important to save all of your reciepts, especially if you plan to itemize your deductions this year. (Russ Schick/Wagner Financial Services, CPA) "If they know for sure they are itemizing they should look at making sure the property taxes on their house are paid before the end of the year and make all of their charitable deducations. And then all of the forms and stuff related to doing your tax return should proably come in in January so by February you should be able to do your tax return." The I-R-S's website has a whole list of credits and deductions that you may qualify for. While on their website, you can file your taxes. More than 90 million Americans e-filed their taxes last year. The IRS say it's the easiest, fastest and most accurate way to file and get back any money. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KXMB CBS Bismarck North D]
Perhaps you're planning your New Year celebration. But you might do well to consider how your taxes can be affected by what decisions you make between now and January First. A charitable gift now can make a difference in your tax situation when April 15th rolls around. Ken Kitzman of the Minot Area Community Foundation says this is a good time to decide if you want to help a local charity or non-profit group. He says beyond the tax advantages, you'll know you're helping people who really need it. But he says if you want to donate, now is the time to take action. (Ken Kitzman, Minot Area Community Foundation) "We're literally running down now to the end of the year where there are advantages to take care of that and there are many different forms. My advice is to contact a professional advisor or CPA or tax preparation person and they'll help guide them through that." The Minot Area Community Foundation distributes funds to local charities and groups each fall. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KXMC CBS Bismarck North ]
