You will soon be getting an early christmas present in the mail. Property Tax statements will be shipped out later this week. Burleigh County auditor Kevin Glatt says most people will be pleasantly surprised at what they see. During the last lesislative session a bill was passed providing about three hundred million dollars in grants to school districts to lower the tax burden. Glatt says those property owners in Burleigh County could see a double digit decrease in taxes. (Kevin Glatt/ Burleigh County Auditor) " it varies widely between the school district...for example the Bismarck Public School District will see an 18 percent decrease or the properties in Bismarck the school district had an 82 mill reduction where as another small rural school district or in contrast a rural school district in burleigh county that seen a 17 mill decrease." about 9- thousand native american veterans in new mexico are about to get a check they never expected. today the state announced those vets are going to split a million dollars. erisa nakano is live in farmington to tell us why. erisa? the department of defense improperly withheld state income tax from thousands of native american veterans. today -- many veterans met with state officials to learn about getting back some of their money. state officials held a meeting at the shiprock chapter house for native american veterans who had state income tax withheld while serving in the u-s military. "the reason is many of you who have honorably served this country." if there's proof that your income tax was withheld while you lived on tribal land-- you could get a settlement check. "hopefully this will make up for some of the pay that i didn't receive." "i guess, in a way, it came at the right time. i was needing money with the economy the way its now." state officials say -- even in the middle of a budget crisis -- -they set aside one million dollars to split up among veterans who qualify. "those taxes should have never been withheld. we have the mechanisms in place now to keep this from happening, but for those that were taken out before, it's important to make this right."
