  • they're stopgates for illegal shipments and a source of income for a state in need of cash. but all five major new mexico ports of entry could be vacant for two ghts in the next year -- all because of mandatory furloughs. kayla anderson has more on how that could create both security and financial concerns. "are services going to be effected? absolutely." governor richardson said many will have to make a sacrifice because of the state's budget crisis. but for two days -- the 8 hour graveyard shift will be unstaffed at the state's five major ports of entry. all commercial vehicles can drive through freely... with no one to question what they're carrying or make sure they've paid their fees. 17:12 "is the potential there at minute thumbnail 06:03 pm something illegal or illicit could come through the state of new mexico, sure." colonel forrest smith admits there's a heightened safety issue.... but says law enforcement will be on high alert. "we will still have state police officers out throughout the state, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week." the closure could also mean a loss of revenue... because the state won't be able to collect on a special tax for out of state truckers. the department estimates that could mean a loss of around 6- thousand dollars. "yeah, we'll probably lose a little bit of revenue." and the trucking permit office will be closed -- potentially costing the state tens-of-thousands of dollars. however -- the department is telling trucking companies now ... so they can buy their permits ahead of time. the minimal staffing at the ports of entry is not expected to lead to longer lines.. public safety officials says if it does-- they'll do what they do now-- and just wave cars through. the state minute thumbnail 06:04 pm personnel board meets tomorrow to decide if it will approve the furlough plan.
