  • When shopping online, do you pay a sales or use tax? According to state tax leaders, that's what is supposed to happen. While many businesses remit a sales tax to the state, others don't have an online sales tax. If that's the case, shoppers are supposed to fill out a remittance form... and pay the state a 5 percent sales tax for purchases. The problem is, most North Dakotans don't even know they're supposed to be doing this. It's also nearly impossible to enforce... and today alone could result in thousands of dollars of lost revenue to the state. State tax commissioner Cory Fong says they also want to make sure businesses are being treated fairly. (Cory Fong/State Tax Commissioner) "To make sure that our online companies are being treated the same as our businesses downtown that have been doing the job of collecting and remitting sales taxes and so that's just as important as the revenue loss by trying to create that fair playing field for our in-state businesses." Fong says in the past five years there has been a streamline sales tax effort by a number of states trying to solve the internet tax problem... If you have questions about internet taxes... visit www.nd.gov/tax... You can also find a remittance form on that website. [www.clipsyndicate.com | KXMC CBS Bismarck North ]
