Alarm bells went off for many New Mexico educators when they heard about the proposed cuts to education. "Ultimately if you continue to move backwards in financing the schools, there's going to be an impact on learning," said Tom Sullivan, the Executive Director of the New Mexico Coalition of School Administrators ((and the Superintendents Association?)). Sullivan says a state-funded study two years ago showed New Mexico's education system was already under funded. Since then the economy forced districts to cut their spending even more. Any more cuts would mean fewer resources for students, Sullivan pointed out. "Some of those intervention specialists-- some of the nurses and counselors and after school programs-- can help close the gap for a high poverty school." He adds that when it comes to children's education there are other options, "We've been party to a survey each of the last two years which indicated that New Mexico citizenry would rather see taxes raised than see services to education cut." The governor's plan calls for temporary tax increases and a three percent cut to the state budget, including education. Ultimately, if cuts have to be made, school officials would like to see decisions left to school boards, superintendents and administrators, and not state lawmakers.
