  • It takes a lot to impress them here at Sabina Park. Many of the locals who came through the turnstiles were weaned on some of the game's all-time greats. Some were here in 1983, when Viv Richards hit a violent 36-ball 61 to transform a dying Test into an improbable triumph, and those whose memories stretch back further can recall the silken strokeplay of Lawrence Rowe. So when they started purring towards the end of Mahela Jayawardene's innings, you knew you were watching something special. -Cricinfo

  • Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara recorded a world record 624-run test cricket partnership on Saturday as Sri Lanka took an imposing ... all » 587-run first innings lead in the series-opening match against South Africa. Sri Lanka declared its innings at 756 for five wickets shortly after tea when captain Jayawardene missed out on his chase for the best individual score of 400 runs held by West Indies batsman Brian Lara. He was out for 374 runs bowled by seamer Andre Nel ending an innings that lasted for more than 12 hours.

  • The Sri Lankans, coached by Dav Whatmore and captained by Arjuna Ranatunga, used Player of the Tournament Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana as opening batsmen to take advantage of the fielding restrictions during the first 15 overs of each innings. At a time when 50 or 60 runs in the first 15 overs was considered adequate, Sri Lanka scored 117 runs in those overs against India, 123 against Kenya, 121 against England in the quarter-final and 86 against India in the semi-final. Against Kenya, Sri Lanka made 398 for 5, a new record for the highest team score in a one-day international that stood until April 2006.

  • In an atmosphere as highly charged and as dramatic as any could possibly be, and with astonishing reserves of discipline and self belief, Australia won a place in the World Cup final on Sunday. They will play Sri Lanka, who, ironically, they had chosen to avoid in the first week of the tournament. The triumph came by five runs and, it must be said, with the assistance of a woeful West Indian middle order who sunk without trace during a collapse in which they lost eight wickets for 37 runs in just over seven overs.

  • A mesmerising four for 31 by off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan powered Sri Lanka to an emphatic 81-run victory against New Zealand in the first semi-final at Jamaica on Tuesday. A tremendous performance by the ever-reliant Muralitharan, who was on a hat-trick at one stage, ensured that the Kiwis, who were 105-2, lost momentum and within a blink of an eye, collapsed to 116-7.

  • Holding has repeatedly brought up the issue about having the australian player's bats analyzed. Mishits carry for six and four, it could be the bats or could it be the squash ball?

  • Rudi Koertzen gave two official warnings to Dilhara Fernando for running on the wicket in his first over! What was Rudi thinking? It's normal in cricket for the umpire to be courteous enough to warn the player un officially prior to warnign them the first time. Poor Dilhara Fernando knew that one more warning and that was the end of his bowling spell, this in turn totally demoralized Fernando and broke him down. Would Rudi have pulled a stunt like this in a World Cup Semi if the bowler was Australian? Ponting would have exploded all over him.
