Lightbulb An Update From Your Veoh Team

At the end of last week we made a small change to the Veoh Web Player whereby clicking to download a video now downloads the video directly through your browser instead of into your Veoh Web Player.

We made this change as a first step towards some awesome features that are meant to improve your Veoh user experience in the coming weeks.

This change allows us to beam the content to your computer in higher quality and with better download speeds. It also allows you to use a more powerful video player to playback your favorite downloads - whether it's the Windows Media Player, Quicktime, VLC Player, WinAMP etc...

Moving forward, we'll definitely keep you in the loop and update you about upcoming changes, and rest assured we didn't mean for any confusion to occur due to the recent change.

To give you a bit of time to get used to the new system and to cheer you up, we'd like to provide 48 hours of free unlimited viewing on videos with no need to download starting 10am pacific time Tuesday Jan 3rd, 2012.

Please check in with our forum for more updates.

Thanks, and have a lovely new year!

    The Veoh Team

That's great and all... but I've always been able to play it off of a different source. If you're downloading videos off of Veoh via Veoh Web Player, you can select where that video is sent to (default is C:\Users\Videos\Veoh) and you can play it off of WMP or any other source you may choose. I just use Veoh Web Player to download the videos because it downloads much faster. I'm downloading an episode of a show I watch as I type this, and the download speed is consistantly decreasing (at a slow rate, but it's decreasing). Since it is decreasing at a slow rate though, I don't mind it too much, considering that it is downloading faster than what it was when you guys first implemented the update. I was getting 90KB/s, but it looks like the servers is stabilized, but my download speeds are still decreasing (at 206KB/s now).

On a side note though, before updating, you guys should post something on here first. Would've saved people a lot of confusion and taz6122 a lot of trouble.

    Thanks though.

Re: An Update From Your Veoh Team

Is it just me or does anyone else have major problems successfully downloading any files?
Right now, maybe 1 in 10 downloads actually finishes all the way through, but most of them stop at 256kb, 512kb or 1 MB (although yesterday I managed to get some files up until 20% before my browser download window decided the file was finished downloading, when it clearly wasn't).
The last day the Veoh Web Player was in use, I didn't have ANY trouble downloading anything I was looking for.
Ever since the downloads got redirected to my browser I've managed to complete virtually nothing.

I've got plenty of drive space left so that can't be it. Also I've managed to watch full episodes of some DVD rips, but when I'm trying to download them, I get redirected to a message that that particular file isn't hosted on the servers.
I also considered the possibility that, since all the files I was looking for at the time were uploaded by the same user, maybe something was wrong with that particular account, but I've managed to download other files by that user (which unfortunately I didn't really need) as a test.
And besides, the problem isn't really confined to one user, or filesize for that matter.

I don't know what kind of "big changes" you have planned for the near future, but right now I wish I could have my trusted Veoh Web Player back cause I could at least download stuff.

Maybe the Veoh team will finally figure out that those the web player didn't work for is a very small minority that either has a virus, worm, bug, that they just didn't take proper care and clean their systems and registry regularly, before they installed the software, they have software that is incompatible with the player, they lack updates or their systems are lemons. Maybe not! I figured that out long ago.

With over 50,000 forum members, and who knows how many members before the forum started, there was a very small percentage of users complaining.

We lost all of the old timers who had spent countless hours uploading hundreds of videos, customizing their pages (and were proud of them) with the change of the homepage and the addition of the qlipso player to it.
We lost more when they updated from the 2009 player which I still use.

Maybe this new way will work for the majority, maybe it won't. We will soon see!

I know that I've been downloading other episodes of a show without a problem. Finally, the download speed finally stabilizes at 200KB/s (should be faster, but it was at 90 when they FIRST did this... possibly due to the server going through an update, but I'm not complaining). They are around 225Mb and I can download them completely in 15 minutes. I can download up to 3 with no issues whatsoever, as well. I do agree though, I miss being able to download via VWB... Maybe they should just give users a choice on how they want to download it.

As for now though, I'm not really complaining anymore... videos are downloading fairly quick and completely without any problem. But that can turn around very... very fast.

    Hey There,

First - Taz6122, as always, the Veoh team appreciates all your help and moderation. You are the best!

Second - we want to make sure we resolve any download issues. So far, we have found that downloads for a large portion of our community are working far better and with fewer errors. However, we realize that no change is perfect and that this solution might be buggy for some videos. We want to get this right!

To help us fix the system we need a little feedback. If you land on a video that cannot be downloaded, please email me the URL (eric@veoh.com) so we can check the system and fix any bugs. Send them over!

    Thanks for using Veoh!

    Eric

Re: An Update From Your Veoh Team

First off, thx guys for replying. Believe me, I've been to sites where trying to get through to a moderator was like trying to find a Holy Grail or summit lol.
For now I seem to be the only one having serious issues with the new setup.

I'll see what I can do about getting you a list of URL's of files that won't download for me, and I'll email it to you.
I'm a pretty random browser though so I'm not sure I can recall every single file I tried to download a couple of days ago.

As for jwilber11, are you saying you download everything at the same speed?? That's weird... I've been using Veoh since at least 2006 or 2007 (don't let the "join date" fool you - this particular account was made back in 2008), and for as long as I can remember, downloads speeds have always varied, depending on the file. Some would d/l at 10-20 kbps, others at several hundreds of kbps.
Maybe Veoh changed while I was away cause, tbh, I've not used it since 2010 and had only just returned after the holidays for 2 days when it blew up on me, so to speak.

One final thought before I get to work on that URL list: it puzzles me that no one so far has mentioned that all the files, even the incomplete ones, are now being randomly renamed to a long string of letters and numbers (something like "e41y34900c69c32f4739d474d4997e99fe5098eb7.avi") rather than the actual filename.
They play fine and all, it's just sometimes the filenames have details you can't find in the actual vids. If I'm only d/l one file it's not that big a deal, but if I'm d/l 3 or 4 at once that take a while to finish, it's hard to keep track of what is what.
Or is this just part of my problem as well, and nobody else is getting this?

I'm using Firefox 9.0.1 btw, in case it's any help.

Open notepad, wordpad or something similar and record the title with the dl# or just a few of the first or last digits. You can also use it to record the URLs of videos with damaged files.

Thanks for the suggestion taz, but I've found an easier way. Right-clicking on the finished file in the "downloads" window of your browser will give you the option of returning to the original d/l page on Veoh, where you can just Ctrl+C the original filename.

Also: I just sent you a mail with a number of links, Eric.
