Moses Sithole (September 17, 1964 ) is a South African serial killer who committed the "ABC Murders", so named because they began in Atteridgeville, continued in Boksburg and finished in Cleveland, a suburb of Johannesburg.
Joel David Rifkin (born January 20, 1959) is an American serial killer who murdered 17 women, mostly drug addict prostitutes, between 1989 and 1993 in New York City. Although Rifkin often hired prostitutes in Brooklyn and Manhattan, he lived in East Meadow, a suburban town on Long Island. During his trial, Rifkin was represented by Mineola-based attorney John Lawrence.
Pedro Alonso Lopez (born 8 October 1948 in Santa Isabel, Colombia) is a confessed serial killer from South America, accused of killing more than 300 girls. Aside from un-cited local accounts of the crimes, Lopez’s crimes first received international attention from an interview conducted by Ron Laytner, a long time freelance photojournalist who first met Lopez in his Ambato Prison cell in 1980.

Charles Milles Manson (b. November 12, 1934) is an American criminal who led the "Manson Family," a quasi-commune that arose in the U.S. state of California in the later 1960s. He was found guilty of conspiracy to commit the Tate-LaBianca murders, which members of the group carried out at his instruction. Through the joint-responsibility rule of conspiracy, he was convicted of the murders themselves.
Andrew Phillip Cunanan (August 31, 1969 - July 23, 1997) was an American serial killer who murdered five people, including fashion designer Gianni Versace, in a cross-country journey during a three-month period in 1997, ending with Cunanan's suicide, at the age of 27. On June 12, 1997, Cunanan became the 449th fugitive to be listed by the FBI on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, and became the first person from San Diego to be placed on that list.

John Wayne Gacy (March 17, 1942 - May 10, 1994) also known as The Killer Clown, was an American serial killer. He was convicted and later executed for the rape and murder of 33 boys and young men between 1972 and his arrest in 1978, 27 of whom he buried in a crawl space under the floor of his house, while others were found in nearby rivers. He became notorious as the "Killer Clown" because of the many block parties he threw for his friends and neighbors, entertaining children in a clown suit and makeup, under the name of "Pogo the Clown."

Though he admitted to counts of murder, rape, and cannibalism, and was the suspect in several unsolved murders, he recanted and restated a number of confessions. Henry Lee Lucas (August 23, 1936 - March 13, 2001) was an American criminal, convicted of murder and once listed as America's most prolific serial killer.
Edward Theodore Gein (August 27, 1906 - July 26, 1984) was a notorious American killer. Gein is known to have killed two people, but is suspected of killing others. His crimes earned widespread noteriety after authorities discovered Gein had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and manufactured gruesome trophies and keepsakes from the corpses.
Aileen Carol Wuornos (born Aileen Carol Pittman) (February 29, 1956 - October 9, 2002) was an American serial killer who was convicted and sentenced to death by the state of Florida in 1992. She ultimately received five additional death sentences. Wuornos admitted to killing seven men in separate incidents, all of whom she claimed either raped or attempted to rape her while she was working as a prostitute. She was put to death via lethal injection on October 9, 2002.

This film, and Broomfield's follow up, should be viewed by anyone who wants to reexamine their feelings about capital punishment. Wurous is abused by everyone, obviously at least half mad, and in a state of terror at being incarcerated. A ghoulish group of hanger ons try to exploit her at every turn (interestingly, the lawyer is given a questionable reprieve in the sequel) and even grease her path to the electric chair. The system to takes a crack at exploiting her "fame." Some dismiss Broomfield's work as egocentric and cheap shot ridden; I find it honest and actually quite compassionate. I think he was derided for presenting an unflattering portrait of the then in vogue Courtney Love. Well, looks like he was right on that one too. This is, I think, his strongest film. But see the sequel too; one the grim jokes turn themselves inside out.
