The Goodies

The Goodies

The Goodies is a surreal British television comedy series of the 1970s and early 1980s. The series, which combines sketches and situation comedy, was shown during prime time, and is popular with all ages. The show was co-created and co-written by Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie, who also all starred in it. Bill Oddie wrote the music for the series — while "The Goodies Theme" was co-written by Bill Oddie and Michael Gibbs. The directors/producers of The Goodies series were John Howard Davies, Jim Franklin and Bob Spiers. The television series was made by the BBC 2 from 1970 to 1980 — and was then made by the ITV company LWT from 1981 to 1982. (Taken from Wikipedia) The Goodies quickly achieved cult status in Britain, America, Canada, Australia and even Germany.

  • The Goodies are surprised because everyone is against them. When they go to the local police station, they are informed that they are 'Baddies'. Indeed, while they are in the police station, talking to the Police Sergeant, the Goodies are simultaneously committing offenses all over England. When the Police Sergeant accuses the Goodies of the crimes and disruptions, they point out to him that it could not have been them because they were there with him when the offenses happened. The Police Sergeant eventually agrees with them. The Goodies are not the only 'nice' people involved in offenses. Many other nice people are also simultaneously committing similar types of offenses, and it is interesting to find that all of the people involved are contestants in the "Nicest Person in the World" competition. The Goodies investigate and find that a mysterious Dr. Petal is behind the occurrences.

  • The Goodies are annoyed when they discover that the Army is building a military establishment on what had been supposed to be a children's playground. Disguised as members of the military, they provide the plans to the soldiers who are to build the equipment. The Goodies "assist" the Army and their plans lead to the Army 'equipment' looking more like a children's playground than the sleek military equipment the Army is expecting. Then the Army gets another shock — the people who the Goodies had arranged to turn up to test the equipment, are not exactly what the Army had been expecting to see. • The Goodies go to the beach for a swim, but discover that the water is polluted. Then they notice how widespread the pollution is. They discover that the Ministry for Pollution is responsible for the problem. The Goodies arrange for widespread grass to overcome the pollution, by seeding the clouds with grass seeds, and the results are far beyond their wildest dreams. Cars can no longer be driven, because the streets cannot be seen, and everybody grows grass instead of hair. Lawn mowers are in fashion as transport — also in fashion are tiny garden ornaments and scarecrows which are made especially for wearing in people's hair. Birds also profit by being able to build nests in the hair. Although all seems to be idyllic, the Goodies find that there is an unexpected drawback to their environmental solution to the problem. • When Graeme brings home a girl whom he and Tim consider a bimbo, Graeme and Tim discuss her in a very sexist manner. Bill, horrified at their disparagement of women, pretends to be a woman and reports Tim's and Graeme's behaviour to the Women's Liberation Authority. This results in a visit to the Goodies' office by the frightening Barbara, who arranges for Tim and Graeme to work for her father (Charlie), who is chauvinistic. Graeme is treated well in his role of butler — but Tim, who is forced to work as the housemaid ("Timbellina"), has to do all of the work, as well as having to put up with a lot of sexist behaviour from the master of the house. Later, things change, with Bill reverting back to normal — while Tim, as "Timbellina", takes up the cause on behalf of women. (Details taken from Wikipedia)
