In June 1940 the British government organised a military operation to withdraw their British and Allied troops from Northern France after a heavy defeat following the German break through to the channel Ports.
In 1940 the Germans smashed French resistance, which left the British no choice but to rescue the troops. The Operation Dynamo was carried out from Dunkirk. A group of about 40 Destroyers, minesweepers, sloops, transports and patrol crafts were used in the operation.
As the British army withdrew from Dunkirk, crushed by the German war machine, a different kind of war was being waged right across the globe. It was the propaganda battle - and it was fought in the newsrooms and print works of the newspapers in Britain, Germany and the United States.
By June about 4,338,200 Soldiers (French, English and Belgian) were rescued and bought to England. Six destroyers were sunk (by the Germans) and many other smaller boats were also sunk. Despite the loss the evacuation was a success.

Vera Lynn was the "Forces Sweetheart" in World War Two. Vera Lynn was one of Britain’s premier entertainers during the war.
Vera Lynn was born in March 1917 in London. By the age of seven she was singing on a regular basis in working men's clubs and she joined a dancing troupe in which she stayed until the age of fifteen. Vera Lynn made her first broadcast in 1935 when she san with the famous Joe Loss Orchestra. Before the war, she also worked with such luminaries as Charlie Kunz. However, it was during the war that Vera Lynn found fame. During the war, Vera Lynn also made three films: We'll Meet Again (made in 1942) Rhythm Serenade (made in 1943) One Exciting Night (made in 1944)
