By Jupiter - Wilding Picture Productions, 1941, 26 min Finally, a film for the rude parents! Veteran Hollywood character actor Chick Chandler plays Thornton Poindexter, a hapless everyman who learns that a little kindness goes a long way when the Roman god Jupiter allows him to re-live a particularly miserable day. This film was originally made for Marshall Fields' employees, who must have had a severe enough courtesy problem to warrant the expense of making such a film.
A clown recalls the days when he first joined the circus and discusses how the Greatest Show on Earth has changed. He reminisces about the circus train, preshow preparations, the performers and the big show.
A Hollywood-produced melodramatic short that deals with prophylaxis, diagnosis and clinical treatment of syphilis. Discusses follow-up treatment, sources of infection and community control. Unfortunately, this is edited version which is missing the graphic syphilis sores on male genetalia and the demonstrations on how to use condoms. (I say "unfortunately" because those scenes give the film a different tone than the milder version you'll see here. Still looking for a full copy of original version.)
Exchanging Greetings and Introductions - Young America Films, 1960, 11 min First impressions are hard to shake, so this film teaches youngsters the importance of greetings and introductions. Like many films in this genre, the filmâs producers are asking a lot of children who just a generation earlier were instructed to âonly speak when spoken to.â Now, it seems, not only are kids expected to quickly assess their family and friendsâ position on the social ladder, they are also supposed to provide newly-introduced adults with topics of conversation.
Helping Johnny Remember - Portafilms, 1956, 10 min Kids in a purgatory-like limbo space are building a perfect little society out of shoeboxes and poster paint. Johnny has been banished from the town because he can't get along with the others! Can the unseen narrator help Johnny and the other children remember how to get along with each other? And what would YOU do if a Sulky moved into your shoebox neighborhood?
Like many other Centron venereal disease films, "Innocent Party" focuses on the morality and emotions associated with venereal disease rather than the medical aspects. The actual mechanics of syphilis transmission are only briefly mentioned let alone prevention via condom use, yet the shame and anguish are clear for all to see. This film echoes the common theme found in many venereal disease films - that premarital sex leads to VD.
Drug Needs Review Cartoon (1969) Lockheed Aircraft This film is part of a cartoon series that describe how drugs affect their users. Designed for management personnel, this odd cartoon leaves many questions- in particular: why did Lockheed feel that the best way to explain his subject matter was via Flintstone-like cavemen?
This 1970's educational film uses a wonderfully catchy song and lots of footage of 1970's Chicago to encourage children to use their imaginations. "Lines are fun...look around..." from the Coronet Art For Beginners series, 1973
American Social Hygiene Association / Willard Pictures, 11 minutes This short, which focuses on gonorrhea, or the "Great Sterilizer," takes place at a factory lecture. Such preventative lectures were commonplace in a time when a venereal disease epidemic could devastate productivity in a company town. While the film is not explicit, it manages to place the blame for the epidemic on men who frequent prostitutes.
