Sotna is a news show with a difference - it's researched and presented by young Egyptians, under the age of 17. The reports all focus on issues related to children and, in this the pilot episode, follow a theme related to sports. The stories show a variety of ways in which sport is helping young people. The young journalists were all trained by Offshoot.
Egypt's street children are seen but rarely heard. In this film they talk frankly about their experiences in an attempt to present the problem to a other Egyptians. The film won an award at the Senegal film festival.
Assiut is one of Egypt's poorest areas, after decades of hardship a pioneering group of farmers are starting to reap the fruits of their labour. Fifteen years fighting back the desert to turn seemingly barren sand into succesfull and productive fields. The film is researched and presented by two young journalists trained by Offshoot to report on the MDGs for the UN's Sailing the Nile project.
A village on the outskirts of Aswan has a big problem. After years without a proper sewage system the water table has risen, leaking dirty water into people's houses. With help from the government and the UN the village is now working on establishing a proper drainage system. The report was produced by two young journalists from Aswan, who were trained and supported by Offshoot as part of the UN project on the MDGs - Sailing the Nile.
In the rural villages around Sohag, it's all too easy for children to slip through the net of primary education. However a new type of school is being developed where teachers take a back seat and guide the students as they work together, learning subjects through a form of peer educations. The story is presented and researched by two young people from Sohag who were trained as journalists by Offshoot for the UN project on the MDGs - Sailing the Nile.

A film following the progress of a housing rehabilitation scheme, established in one of Cairo's poorest areas - Al-Darb Al-Ahmar. The film was funded by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Ford Foundation.
Winner at the 2005 International Emmys, the film follows a group of young people from Minya in Upper Egypt as they creat a series of animated films on the subject of child rights. Was awarded the Internation Children's Day of Broadcasting Prize.
Along Yemen's border with Saudi Arabia a steady stream of children set out on a dangerous journey. They risk robbery, sexual abuse and even death as they cross the border smuggling small amounts of flour and drugs. This film was broadcast within Yemen as part of a campaign by the International Organisation of Migration, UNICEF and the Yemeni Government.
Residents of a village in Minya, Egypt are taking charge of community health issues thanks to a project being implemented by the Ministry of Health and the John Hopkins Health Communications Partnership. This film takes you inside the village to meet the many people commited to promoting issues of health and development in rural Egypt.
One of Cairo's most historic neighbour hoods is Al-Darb Al-Ahmar. Once a bustling center for Islamic crafts, arts and architecture the area is now one of the city's poorest. Thanks to a project funded by the Aga Khan, traditional crafts are now being revived.
