At the very top of Pavagadh (925 kilometers above sea level) is a Divine Mother temple, dedicated to Kali Ma. The start of the path to the top of Pavagadh -- and to the Divine Mother (Kali) Temple at the top -- begins in the town of Champaner at the base of the mountain (commonly called Pavagadh Station, where pilgrims begin the 5 km trek to the top). On certain festival days, primarily Navaratri, the number of people who mount the "thousand steps" to the top is in the millions.
