The death penalty has come under intense criticism of late. innocent people have been released from death row after years of wrongful incarceration. other innocents, such as ruben cantu in Texas, may have been wrongfully executed. Calls have been made to stop all executions and investigate the system or to abolish it once and for all. At the same time Murder Victim Families are organizing against the death penalty and say "Stop Killing in My Name." Democracy is animated when an informed public is engaged in the issues of the day. We hope this series will reach new and diverse participants and audiences and will stimulate public dialogue about this contemporary social issue and inspire action to make change. Video is a wonderful medium for the transformation and awareness of the world.

Ferdowsi Teach-In Introduction by Prof. Michael Hillmann
Ferdowsi1000.com is devoted to the Persian language, Persian literature, and Iranian culture from the days of the Persian epic poet Ferdowsi onward. The siteâÂÂs name alludes to the fact that a thousand years have passed since Ferdowsi completed his famous verse redaction of Persian Iranian legends, myths, tales, and history called Shâhnâmeh [(The) Book of Kings]. Ferdowsi1000.com got its impetus from a Spring 2009 Persian literature seminar at The University of Texas at Austin called âÂÂFerdowsiâÂÂs Shâhnâmeh and the Epic Traditionâ and a conference held in conjunction with the seminar called âÂÂFerdowsi Teach-In at Texas.â In the Spring of 2010, a parallel Persian literature seminar on âÂÂRumi and the Sufi Traditionâ and a Rumi conference will take place. A Hâfez seminar and conference are in the works for the Spring of 2011. www.ferdowsi1000.com

On March 12, 2008 students and members of the public put the death penalty "on trial." It was conducted as a sort of public "trial" at which the "defendant" was the death penalty.

Jan 27, 2007 University Democrats nomination meeting. So far Rick Reed has been the only candidate to oppose the death penalty.
University Democrats and Central Austin Democrats endorsement is highly anticipated as one of the most important in Austin because in races where they jointly endorse, candidates can claim the endorsement of the Austin Progressive Coalition (APC) which distributes close to 15,000 yellow doorhangers that list the APC candidates in progressive Austin precincts.

This is video of the debate between the University of Texas at Austin Chapter of Campaign to End the Death Penalty and Young Conservatives of Texas on January 29, 2007 The debate was in the Oxford style, with alternating speakers from each side debating a resolution that the death penalty be abolished. Each side also had a "questioner" who asked one or two questions from the other side, designed to point to the weaknesses in the opposing side's argument. In the middle of the debate, there was a short break in which audience members made comments and asked questions. The yays won 114 to 43 on the resolution to Abolish the Death Penalty!
