Monika Smith worked in and around the Bognor Regis area of West Sussex, England. The Antique Broadshow is a dance group made up of ladies of a certain age. The group perform at charity functions in and around the Bognor Regis area of West Sussex, UK Two of theor members are finally retiring and this short film is to help recruit new members to the group.
The full film is being made available on Veoh, see my Cycle Writer channel A feature length documentary about small town journalism. This portrayal of the working life of a popular photojournalist shows the joys and frustrations of life behind a shorthand notebook and a camera lens. Professional cameraman Stuart McKears followed the late Monika Smith for a year as she set out from her West Sussex home on her trusty bicycle in her quest for stories. She is seen on land, on sea, standing on a chair, clambering up a ladder and lying on the ground to capture the most eye-catching shot. Through it all shines her vibrant personality and popularity in what turned out to be her final year of work before cancer claimed her life at the too young age of 55. Monika's death in 2006 has added a poignancy to "Cycle Writer" but that does nothing to diminish its impact as an accurate portrayal of life as a journalist in the early 21st century.
