Whisper of the Heart, known in Japan as Mimi wo Sumaseba (耳をすませば, Mimi wo Sumaseba? lit. If You Listen Closely) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Aoi Hiiragi. In 1995, it was adapted into an anime feature film by Studio Ghibli. This was the first Japanese film to use the Dolby Digital sound format. An English dub of this film was released by Buena Vista Home Entertainment on March 7, 2006. Turner Classic Movies televised both the dubbed and subbed versions on January 18, 2006 as part of their month-long celebration of Miyazaki (in honor of his birthday, January 5). The English title, Whisper of the Heart, was created by Studio Ghibli and used on several officially licensed "character goods" released around the same time as the movie was released in theaters in Japan.
"It is the 30s of the Showa Era and it has been 10 years since the Second World War ended. With neckbreaking speed of economic development, the rich got richer, but those who struggle to survive at the bottom strata of society continue to increase. Kitaro, the last of the Tribe of Spirits, was born in a grave in such a society. Based on the observations of Mizuki Shibaru of what is hell, what is the human world and what is happiness, the original Kitaro satirizes the human world and expresses the joy of being alive." A Volkswagon ad from Europe for the new Golf GTI featuring Gene Kelly popping and locking in a recreation of his famous Singing in the Rain segment. The Gene Kelly Foundation officially licensed Gene's likeness to Volkswagon for the ad. Gene Kelly's face was digitally superimposed over three seperate breakdancers that performed different parts of the new footage through a replica of the original Singing in the Rain set. The ad also features a remix from Mint Royale of the original Singing in the Rain tune.
