a big decision looms tonight about what's next for the state's massive budget shortfall. state lawmakers are waiting and watching anxiously as governor richardson has one day left to approve their budget cuts - or minute thumbnail 06:00 pm wipe them out with his veto pen. stuart dyson is here with what lawmakers are worried about. call it a billion dollars - if you add up the last budget year - the current budget year - and the next budget year. that's the size of the hole the recession has blown in the state's checking account - that's what everybody's worried about. the legislature plugged most of the hole in last month's special session - approving spending cuts of more than seven percent for most state agencies - with much smaller percentage cuts for public schools - higher education - and medicaid. since then the governor has complained loudly about the cuts - painting dire pictures of prisons closing - state parks shutting down - welfare medical services dwindling away - lawmakers expect him to say no to some of their spending cuts - to cut the cuts. " without making these cuts state government is on the brink of closing - plain and simple - it is that severe of a budget crisis - we can't delay it - if we minute thumbnail 06:01 pm delay it it's just like paying our mortgage with our credit card." " we have a constitution in the state of new mexico that says we live within the budget every year - if he does that - for every cut he makes obviously it unbalances that budget." lawmakers in both parties say anything that gets vetoed will be back on the table when they come back for their regular session in january - the governor has said tax increases are inevitable. with an unemployment rate of nearly eight percent - new mexico has lost more than 40 thousand jobs in the last year - almost all of them in the private sector - there have been no layoffs of state employees - back to you. governor richardson has made two sizeable cost-saving moves since the special session. he ordered a freeze for all capital outla

The Vibe award incident really had a big impact on Dre. I have never seen Dre as determined and focused as he is right now. His anger and will to defeat all those who try to bring him down are having a direct impact on the aggressive nature of his recent productions. I promise you that no one is as driven as Dre is to make Detox FUBAR the competition or anyone who stands in his way. Dre is looking for a new sound and for that he is working with some people with fresh ideas and grooves. Right now if I were to guess, I would guess that Focus and/or Hi-Tek will be to Detox what Mel-Man was to 2001. Every time Dre has changed sounds he has always done it with a new group of musicians. Detox will be no different. So although some of us on the 2001 crew will be a part of Detox it will probably be a much smaller role and a fresh group of musicians and co producers will get a shot to make their mark. According to news agency AP, it is the worst fire disaster ever to hit the island. Around 700 houses have been destroyed and over 4000 people evacuated. Accompanying the flames is one of the most powerful heat waves in memory, with temperatures in parts of Melbourne reaching 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit) in the last few weeks. Dozens of heat-related deaths have been reported. By Sunday, the temperatures had dropped to the mid-20s in the area. The fires were being fought mostly with aircraft, except in areas where homes were at risk, authorities said. In northern Australia, 60 percent of the state of Queensland was flooded, officials reported, and residents were warned to be on the lookout for crocodiles in urban areas. Still, despite earlier reports, the fires have not posed a significant threat to more populous areas, including Melbourne, as they sweep across rural outskirts of southeastern Australia, Walshe said. By Sunday afternoon, eight major fires were burning through Victoria, destroying hundreds of thousands of acres, said Daniel Connell, spokesman for the state's Country Fire Authority. The largest blaze has centered around Kinglake, where 100,000 hectares (247,000 acres) have burned down. Last week we reported on an outbreak of bird flu in Hong Kong. But according to veterinary workers in mainland China, there was a similar outbreak over a month ago. The outbreak of the mysterious poulty disease was covered up by Chinese communist officials. Farmers and residents say that because there was no immunization planning in place, and no supervision of chicken sales, they believe sick chickens were sold to provinces throughout China. Here's more. The outbreak happened in Jiangsu Province in the cities of Dongtai and Haian. [Reporter](quote1): "When did it happen?" [Worker](quote 2): "About one month ago." According to farmers, 70 percent of all chickens in Guanba Cottage of Dongtai City died within two days after being infected by a mysterious disease--their symptoms included fever, anorexia, and green faeces. They say about 100,000 chickens died. [A farmer](quote 3):"We have no chickens here. They all died. We don't know anything about the disease. It was not treatable with any medicine. The chicken died very fast after being infected." Some residents in Tangyang County of Tongtai City say that local chicken farmers now have nothing left. They say the local government had no effective immunization plan and there were no media reports so they aren't sure if it was Bird Flu. Residents say that because the regime didn't fully compensate the farmers, sick or dead chickens were traded at low rates, which were then sold all over China.
