Old Movies with Roy Rogers: Rough Riders Roundup(1939)
The greatest of all singing cowboys, Roy Rogers returns to action in Rough Riders’ Roundup, an exciting Wild West adventure. Rogers, assisted by his gang the Rough Riders, is working for the Texas border patrol when he is confronted by a vicious band of criminals who rob stagecoaches. As with most Rogers’ films, in between the action there’s always time for some good old country songs, and in both activities The King of the Cowboys doesn’t disappoint. The marvelous Mary Hart is the leading lady, and her duets with Rogers light up the screen. Rough Riders’ Roundup is a well made barrel of Old West fun.

Cowgirl Dorothy Page Starring in The Singing Cowgirl (1939)
Dorothy Page is Hollywood’s first and only singing cowgirl! Though the concept might have done better financially after the women’s rights movement, the crooning female western heroine still works quite well. In The Singing Cowgirl, Page is a rancher who uncovers a plot by a corrupt government official to steal her neighbor’s gold-rich land. Murder and treachery abounds, and Page enlists the help of a handsome drifter (Dave O’Brien) to fight off the bad guys. Though the action is fun, most of the film’s effervescent charm comes from the Page’s beautiful contralto voice. There are also some hysterically unintentionally goofy lines, like “edgier than a rattlesnake in a pickle barrel,” making The Singing Cowgirl the perfect throwback film to enjoy with popcorn on a Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Boggs Steps Out is a delightful popcorn movie. A young man who’s just another cog in the giant corporate office, Stuart Erwin, uses his innate and uncanny ability to keep track of statistics to win a major contest and a substantial sum of money. The world is Erwin’s oyster, and he decides to leave the big city for a small town where he can continue to be a big fish. He makes the seemingly mundane purchase of a barrel factory, but this is where his adventures really begin. Mixing in with wealthy entrepreneurs, and their beautiful and perilous women, Erwin begins to understand how difficult and treacherous the high life can be. Mr. Boggs Steps Out is a well paced and well acted film, thanks in no small part to the drop dead gorgeous Shakespearian actress Helen Chandler.

I haven't had time to write any new songs lately, so I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel and dragging up these very early attempts at writing. I wrote this little love song as a poem when I was 15, and it was published in the Ashwood High School magazine of that year. So now, several decades later, I can inflict it on my YouTube viewers. Here's your hockey stick Mr. Gore. The money supply hockey stick proves that the collapse of the dollar is very near, there are indisputable facts to prove it. But I don't need to tell you the facts, because they are indisputable. Just look at the hockey stick on this graph, and then tell me that we are not in huge trouble. You had better go out and buy yourself a couple of wheel barrels to haul around all of your money, just like they did in Germany after their currency failed. Although today with debit cards, I guess we will be OK, maybe we don't need the wheel barrels after all. Just invest in things that will always have value - tangible assets - things that you can't live without, or should I say things that other people can't live without, like guns, ammo water, food, camping type equipment, gin or whiskey (for medicinal purposes). That way if you end up needing something that you don't have, then you will be able to make a trade for it. I'm glad that Glenn Beck is sounding the alarm bell, but I'm afraid that very few are listening, and of the ones who are listening, most will take no action.
