  • Demonstration by Iola Evans BHSII & staff of the Rheidol Riding Centre. Website: http://www.rheidol-riding-centre.co.uk A fun evening which may answer many of the questions asked and perhaps inspire you to compete yourselves. Tests ridden in shows are used as a measure of the correctness of the horse's (and rider's) schooling. The scoring scale is as follows: 10-Excellent, 9-Very good, 8-Good, 7-Fairly good, 6-Satisfactory, 5-Sufficient, 4-Insufficient, 3-Fairly bad, 2-Bad, 1-Very bad, 0-Not performed The collective marks are based on: Gaits - the freedom and regularity of the horse's movement. Impulsion - the horse's desire to move forward, elasticity of steps, roundness. Submission - the horse's attention and confidence, harmony with rider, lightness of movements, and acceptance of the bit. Rider's position and seat - correctness and effect of the aids. • Go to: http://www.aberystwyth-online.co.uk One of the largest medieval fortresses in Britain certainly Wales. The immense size of this castle covering (1.2 hectares), makes it the largest in Britain after Windsor. Begun in 1268 by the Anglo-Norman marcher lord, Gilbert de Clare. Concentrically planned, the rings of stone and water defences are formidable. The Castle is famous for its 'leaning tower', standing at 15 metres high and leaning 10 degrees out of true vertical, after being blowen up in the Civil War. The impressive Great Hall is now used for various functions and weddings.

  • Go to: http://www.aberystwyth-online.co.uk Castell Coch is a late nineteenth-century 'fairytale'-style castle, whch was built on medieval remains. Castell Coch was designed for the third marquess of Bute by William Burges. The interior is lavishly decorated and furnished in the Victorian Gothic style; a Romantic vision of what a castle in the Middle Ages would have looked. • Caer Gybi a small Roman fortlet located at the centre of Holyhead within the county of Anglesey, which was once in the Roman province of Britannia. The three-walled fort, with it's fourth side fronting the sea is probably the site of a quay, thought to be part of a late 4th century build, associated with Segontium in Caernarfon, which was formed to defend the west coast of Wales against Irish sea-raiders. In the 6th century, the fort was given to Saint Cybi who founded a monastery on the site. The Church of St Cybi stands within the walled fort today. Holyhead (Welsh Caergybi) is name after the fort.
